Today, 15 years ago, on 22 July 2011, Norway was shaken by a terrorist attack. The bombing in Oslo and the attack on the island of Utøya claimed the lives of 77 people.
This weekend, a new memorial was unveiled in Oslo’s Government Quarter. The monumental artwork, "Upholding" (En opprettholdelse in Norwegian), commemorates not only the 77 victims but also symbolizes the strength of community, solidarity, and resilience. Survivors, bereaved family members, and young people all contributed to the creation of the mosaic.
The memorial was designed by Norwegian artist Matias Faldbakken. His work brings together the two sites of the attacks in a single place of remembrance. The steel structure evokes the history of the government buildings damaged in the bombing, while the stone mosaic reflects the peaceful natural surroundings of Utøya, the summer camp site of the Labour Party’s youth organization.
Fifteen years ago, Norwegian society made a commitment not to remain silent and not to forget. The tragedy of 22 July continues to remind us of our shared responsibility to stand against terrorism, extremism, and all forms of hatred, while safeguarding the values of democracy, openness, and mutual trust.
