🌞 Looking for a fun and meaningful way to spend a week of your summer? We still have a few spots at our FREE Summer Day Camp at American Corner Debrecen! 🇺🇸

If you are 12–16 years old and have at least intermediate English skills, this is a great chance to practice your language skills, learn more about American culture, meet new people, and take part in exciting activities all week long.

Themes and activities in this year’s camp will include:
🎬 American pop culture, movies & media
🧪 Science, technology & creative workshops
⚽ Sports and outdoor activities
🎓 Studying in the U.S. & student life
🚌 Mini field trips and outdoor activities
🎉 A fun closing celebration on the final day

🗓 Dates: June 22–26, 2026 (Monday–Friday)
⏰ Time: 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM + optional late afternoon activities
📍 Location: American Corner Debrecen (Bem tér 19/D)
👥 Participants: max. 16 students (selection based on applications)
💰 Cost: Completely FREE
🍴 Please bring your own lunch (fridge and microwave available). Nearby food options are also available, and we’ll provide snacks and refreshments during Friday’s closing celebration.

🇺🇸🇭🇺 Americans of Hungarian heritage visited the Debrecen Summer School. During their visit, the guests explored the University of Debrecen’s main campus on Egyetem Square, learned about methods of teaching the Hungarian language, and discovered the cultural treasures of Debrecen and the surrounding region.

In addition to reconnecting with their Hungarian roots and traditions, the group gained insight into the work of the Debrecen Summer School, where preserving and promoting the Hungarian language and culture plays an important role for members of the Hungarian diaspora around the world.

Besides visiting the University of Debrecen, the guests also toured some of the city’s most notable landmarks. As their journey through Hungary continues, they will visit several other key destinations in the region, gaining a broader understanding of the country’s rich cultural heritage and natural beauty.

What does freedom mean today—and how has its meaning evolved over time? ✨

In connection with the 250th anniversary of the United States 🇺🇸, we invite secondary school and university students to explore the idea of liberty through creative expression in any of the following formats:

🎨 drawing, painting, illustration
📸 photo or collage
🖥️ digital art / poster
📖 comic
✍️ poem, slam poetry, short literary text
🎬 short film
🧩 installation or mixed media

📝 Each submitted work should be accompanied by a short description (3–5 sentences) in English, presenting the idea behind the work.

💡 Suggested sub-themes (optional):
• Freedom and responsibility
• Freedom then and now
• Symbols of freedom
• Freedom of expression
• Freedom and technology
• A moment of freedom

🖼️ Selected works will be exhibited at American Corner Debrecen from the week of June 15 until July 10, 2026.

🎤 The opening event will include a short live program (e.g. slam readings, film screenings, guided walkthrough of the exhibition).

🗳️ Visitors will be able to vote for their favorite works on-site during the exhibition. In addition to the audience award, a jury prize will also be awarded for the best submissions.

🏆 Results will be announced at our Independence Day celebration on July 3.

Join us on May 26 (Tuesday) at 5 pm for a relaxed and engaging conversation about American holidays and traditions!

With Memorial Day as our starting point, we’ll explore how holidays reflect American history, identity, and culture — from remembrance and parades to fireworks and barbecues. We’ll also talk about Independence Day and the upcoming U.S. Semiquincentennial (America’s 250th anniversary in 2026), and what these celebrations mean to Americans today.
