🫒 Days of Indigenous Olive Varieties and Golden Olive Oils of Zadar County
On Saturday, August 8th, the Zadar City Market hosted the "Days of Indigenous Olive Varieties and Golden Olive Oils of Zadar County" event, organized by Zadar County, the University of Zadar, the Olive Growers Association of Zadar County, and Zadar Market, as part of the CENTRAL-BIC project (Interreg Central Europe).
Assistant Professor Šime Marcelić, PhD, from the University of Zadar presented the results of research into indigenous varieties - Plavica, Mašnjača, Drobnica, Peljušica, and Puljiška - revealing how some of them arise spontaneously from the pit, as an entirely new genetic combination of their parent trees. Also presented was a state-of-the-art NIR analyzer, acquired through the CENTRAL-BIC project, which enables fast, non-destructive monitoring of oil and moisture content in the olive fruit - key to determining the optimal harvest time.
Visitors had the opportunity to taste top-quality olive oils from local producers, take part in a workshop on identifying indigenous varieties, and learn more about preserving olive genetic diversity through the indigenous olive nursery (rootstock), established through the CENTRAL-BIC project, at the Agricultural Education Centre in Zemunik.
Thank you to all olive growers, experts, and visitors who contributed to preserving Zadar County's rich olive-growing heritage through their participation! 🌿
