The JAIF Management Team (JMT) provided a project inception briefing to Vietnam Japan University (VJU), the Proponent and Implementing Agency of the newly approved JAIF-funded project, “Educating High-Quality Human Resources for ASEAN Newer Member States through Postgraduate Programs at Vietnam Japan University (VJU).”

The project aims to develop high-quality human resources from ASEAN’s newer Member States, particularly Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Viet Nam, and Timor-Leste, through postgraduate education at VJU. By expanding access to quality higher education, the project helps narrow the development gap and promote more equitable opportunities across the region.

During the briefing, the JMT Senior Programme Officer shared key considerations for successful project implementation, including financial management,  monitoring and evaluation, and visibility. Technical advice was also provided by the Initiative for ASEAN Integration (IAI) and Narrowing the Development Gap (NDG) Division of the ASEAN Secretariat.

A massive earthquake struck northeast Japan. The tsunami that followed reached heights of around 40 metres in some areas. More than 19,000 people lost their lives or went missing.

Across Southeast Asia, the disaster was a painful reminder of a shared reality: in this region, peace and stability also depend on preparedness.

When a typhoon hits, when a volcano erupts, when an earthquake cuts off communities, countries need more than goodwill.

They need a number to call.
A team that can move.
Relief supplies ready before they are needed.
A plan that works across borders.

That same year, JAIF supported the establishment of the AHA Centre — the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on disaster management.

Today, the AHA Centre helps coordinate ASEAN’s response to disasters across the region, supported by systems such as DELSA, which prepositions emergency relief supplies closer to communities at risk.

For ASEAN and Japan, disaster cooperation is part of peace and stability. Because a safer region is also a stronger one.

The JAIF Management Team (JMT) provided a briefing session for the fifth batch of ASEAN Junior Fellowship Programme (AJFP) fellows, covering ASEAN-Japan cooperation, an overview of JAIF, and an introduction to JABOT.

The fellows are currently participating in the one-month AJFP programme, gaining knowledge and a deeper understanding of ASEAN and regional cooperation.

The session continued with a Q&A, with fellows raising questions about JAIF and its support for ASEAN cooperation.

A Glimpse of JAIF at the ASEAN Day Exhibition

From exploring JAIF’s 20-year journey to discovering the stories behind ASEAN–Japan cooperation, the ASEAN Day Exhibition brought together people, ideas, and partnerships in one space.

We were delighted to share JAIF’s journey with visitors and celebrate two decades of cooperation across the region.

But this is not the end!

The JAIF 20 Years exhibition will continue its journey.

A promising business idea can go further with the right guidance and tools.

JAIF supports two complementary approaches to MSME development: strengthening access to mentorship through AMEN Phase 2 and helping businesses better understand their digital readiness through a self-diagnostic tool.

Together, they address two practical needs for growing businesses: trusted guidance and clearer digital direction.

At the ASEAN Day Exhibition, we celebrated the connections and partnerships that have shaped 20 years of JAIF.

We were honoured to welcome Ambassador Yonetani of Japan to ASEAN and Secretary-General of ASEAN, Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, to the exhibition and share a glimpse into the stories and initiatives supported through ASEAN–Japan cooperation.
