South African Embassy Jakarta Indonesia South African - Indonesian relations were formalized through the establishment of diplomatic relations in August 1994.

However, our relations stretch back to the 17th century, when the Dutch colonized both the Cape of Good Hope (now the city of Cape Town) and the East Indies (Batavia). Sh

eik Yusuf, from Ujung Pandang (Makassar), was sent as a political exile by the Dutch to the Cape of Good Hope, arriving there in 1694. It was then that the foundation for the Malay community that today exists in the city of Cape Town was laid. The Embassy of South Africa in Jakarta is furthermore accredited to Timor-Leste since 2009 on a non-residential basis. The political relations between the two countries date back to the days of liberation struggles. There are striking similarities and common challenges the two countries had to face in implementing programmes for transformation from oppression to democratic rule and good governance. South Africa played a critical role in securing the release of Xanana Gusmao from jail after he had been held as political prisoner for a long time. Xanana Gusmao played an important role during the Timorese struggle for independence and served as the first president (2002–07) and fourth prime minister (2007–) of Timor-Leste.

🌍 Nelson Mandela International Day 2026 🌍
On July 20, 2026, the Embassy of the Republic of South Africa in Indonesia, together with the Directorate General of Corrections and the Second Chance Foundation, commemorated Nelson Mandela International Day at the Tangerang Class IIA Women’s Correctional Facility.

With the theme “It’s Still in Our Hands to Combat Poverty and Inequity,” the program highlighted the universality of human dignity, Indonesia’s progressive legal reforms, and the importance of gender-responsive approaches in correctional systems.

The keynote address by H.E. Mpetjane Kgaogelo Lekgoro reaffirmed the enduring relevance of the Nelson Mandela Rules, while vocational and entrepreneurship training empowered 100 women inmates to embrace reintegration with resilience and hope.

This commemoration stands as a testament to the shared commitment to justice, rehabilitation, and inclusive collaboration.

[24 June 2026] H.E. Mpetjane Kgaogelo Lekgoro, Ambassador of the Republic of South Africa to Indonesia, Timor-Leste and ASEAN, visited the Embassy of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste in Jakarta to sign the Book of Condolence for the late H.E. Francisco Guterres Lú-Olo, former President of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, who passed away on Sunday, 21 June 2026, in a hospital in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

During the visit, Ambassador Lekgoro met with H.E. Roberto Sarmento de Oliveira Soares, Ambassador of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste to Indonesia, and conveyed sincere condolences and solidarity with the Government and people of Timor-Leste during this period of mourning.

Our thoughts are with the family, friends and people of Timor-Leste as they honour the life and legacy of President Francisco Guterres Lú-Olo.
