The EU and Indonesia convened the 11th Joint Implementation Committee of FLEGT (Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade) on 14 August, gathering Kementerian Kehutanan RI, Kementerian Luar Negeri RI, EU Environment & Climate and many Indonesian stakeholders and EU Member States. The discussions focused on our cooperation on trade in sustainable forest products.

As the first country to issue FLEGT licenses ten years ago, Indonesia is a pioneer in timber legality and assurance. Now, it is upgrading its system, including with traceability, to be ready for new international sustainability standards.

The EU-Indonesia partnership is getting stronger, and we are building on collaboration mechanisms such as the FLEGT VPA to move forward together.

As Indonesia is celebrating its 81st Independence Day this August, let's look back at the milestones that have shaped the EU-Indonesia partnership. 🇪🇺🇮🇩

1980: The European Economic Community (EEC) and ASEAN signed a Cooperation Agreement, with Indonesia as a signatory.
1988: The Representation of the Commission of the European Communities was established in Jakarta.
1990: Indonesia established its Mission to the European Community in Brussels .
2000: The European Commission adopted its communication "Developing Closer Relations with Indonesia".
2005: EU supported the peace process in Aceh, contributing to the Helsinki MoU and participating in the Aceh Monitoring Mission (AMM).
2009: The EU-Indonesia Partnership and Cooperation Agreement (PCA) was signed, the first such agreement between the EU and an ASEAN Member State.
2013: The EU and Indonesia signed the Voluntary Partnership Agreement (VPA) for Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT).
2014: The EU-Indonesia PCA entered into force.
2016: Negotiations for an EU-Indonesia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) were launched.
2016: The first Joint Committee (JC) meeting under the PCA was held in Brussels.
2022: Indonesia's G20 presidency welcomed high-level visits from the EU and its Member States.
2025: Negotiations on the EU-Indonesia CEPA and Investment Protection Agreement (IPA) were concluded.
2026: At the 10th Political Dialogue, the EU and Indonesia reaffirmed their intention to elevate ties to a Strategic Partnership.

From education and trade to peace, climate action and sustainable developmenr, the EU and Indonesia have built a partnership that continues to grow stronger.
Here's to many more years of cooperation and shared progress.
