This year marks the 80th anniversary of the opening of the Tokyo Trials. To view and treat history correctly is an important prerequisite for Japan’s postwar return to the international community, the political foundation for Japan’s ties with neighboring countries, and more importantly, a key measure for Japan’s commitment to peaceful development. We urge the Japanese side to do serious soul-searching on its history of aggression, make a clean break with militarism, and earn trust from its Asian neighbors and the rest of the world with concrete actions.

From today we start to share a four-part micro-documentary "Surging Tides over the South China Sea: A Voyage to the Future", one episode each day.


Episode 1 "Our Ancestral Seas"
Over 2,000 years ago, generations of Chinese navigators had already charted routes, named islands and reefs, and built a lasting connection with the South China Sea. Now the South China Sea is where the vision of a community with a shared future for humanity sets sail.

As we celebrate the 59th ASEAN Day at the Secretariat, Xinhua has its in-depth headline story “Riding Asia-Pacific momentum: China, ASEAN chart new course for regional development”, on the centuries-long close ties between China and ASEAN which continues to define the bilateral cooperation nowadays.

As Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, the ASEAN Secretary-General describes, ASEAN and China are inseparable neighbors, and China is ASEAN's most important comprehensive strategic partner. In fact, the complementarity between China and ASEAN is structural and expanding practical cooperation between China and ASEAN across multiple sectors has established our partnership as an engine for Asia's development and revitalization, a model for Asia-Pacific regional cooperation, and a benchmark for the solidarity and self-strengthening of the Global South.

China and ASEAN are navigating a shared future. Looking ahead, China and ASEAN are expected to play an increasingly vital role as major forces in the Global South, injecting much-needed stability and growth momentum into a tumultuous world.

According to data released by the General Administration of Customs of China, China’s total import and export volume of goods hit USD 4.36 trillion in the first seven months of 2026, representing a year-on-year increase of 21.8%. Exports registered USD 2.52 trillion, rising 18.5%, and imports stood at USD 1.84 trillion, a jump of 26.7%.
ASEAN continued to rank as China’s largest trading partner. Bilateral trade between China and ASEAN reached USD 744.41 billion, growing 24.7% and accounting for 17.1% of China’s total foreign trade volume. China’s exports to ASEAN amounted to USD 471.68 billion, up 25.1%, while imports from ASEAN came to USD 272.73 billion, with a 24% growth.
Among ASEAN member states, Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia were China’s top three trading partners in descending order.

On 8 August 2026, H.E. Wang Qing, Chinese Ambassador to ASEAN, attended the 59th ASEAN Day Ceremony & ASEAN Food Festival at the ASEAN Secretariat. President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. of the Republic of the Philippines, the rotating President chair of ASEAN, delivered a video speech while ASEAN Secretary-General Dr. Kao Kim Hourn and Foreign Minister Sugiono of Indonesia attended the event and made their respective remarks.

Chinese Mission to ASEAN joined the Permanent Missions of ASEAN Member States and Missions of ASEAN's dialogue partners and set its booth at the Food Festival. With a decoration of distinctive Chinese elements of exquisite food carvings, doll pandas and Chinese garden miniatures, a running short video marking the 5th anniversary of the establishment of the China-ASEAN Comprehensive Strategic Partnership at the background, the China booth treated the guests with a variety of delicacies, including mooncakes, durian puffs and honey-glazed shrimp balls, a mix of traditional Chinese cuisine and Southeast Asian flavors.

Secretary-General Dr. Kao Kim Hourn along with diplomatic envoys and other guests, enjoyed the Chinese food and their experience of Chinese culture, and shared conversations with Ambassador Wang Qing on China-ASEAN cultural connectivity, mutual learning and people-to-people exchanges.

The devastation and tragedies brought by nuclear weapons should never repeat themselves. That said, the particular context of the nuclear explosions should all the more be remembered and the lessons of Japanese militarism’s aggression and expansion must forever serve as an alarm. Right-wing forces in Japan have long been distorting historical facts, politically exploiting the nation’s identity as a nuclear bombing victim for sympathy and deliberately downplaying Japan’s invasion that killed and wounded tens of millions of people in Japan’s neighboring countries, in an attempt to escape accountability for the war.

More ironically, the Japanese authorities have been beefing up military buildup, seeking enhanced nuclear protection from the U.S., and attempting to break free from the three non-nuclear principles. A senior official at the Prime Minister’s Office even clamored for Japan’s independent nuclear armament, without even hiding the ambition for remilitarization. This is a provocation to all peace-loving people in the world and reveals their contempt for historical justice.

This year marks the 80th anniversary of the start of the Tokyo Trials. The jury of history is still out and demands reverence from Japan. The Japanese side needs to face up to the concerns of the international community, earnestly fulfill its nuclear non-proliferation obligations under international law, and not once again stand before the court of history.
