Strengthening dialogue for peace and inclusion 🇦🇹🤝🇮🇩

Among his very first stops in Indonesia, Ambassador-designate Alexander Rieger sat down with the Wahid Foundation. 🕊️

The conversation: peacebuilding, interfaith dialogue, and where Austria and the Foundation can work together.

The Wahid Foundation does remarkable work—bringing communities together, keeping the peace across differences, and standing up for the rights of Indonesia's Indigenous Peoples. It's easy to see how much we share: a belief in dialogue, tolerance, and a society where everyone belongs.

This first meeting is just the beginning. 🇦🇹🇮🇩

Supporting healthcare resilience through Austria–Indonesia cooperation 🇦🇹🤝🇮🇩

Ambassador-designate Alexander Rieger and Austrian Commercial Counsellor Sigmund Nemeti attended the inauguration ceremony of the new Prof. Dr. Abdulrachman Saleh Air Force Hospital, highlighting Austria's longstanding commitment to supporting Indonesia's healthcare sector through bilateral cooperation.

Supported through an Austrian soft loan programme implemented through AME International GmbH, an Austrian company, the hospital represents a significant step in strengthening Indonesia's infectious disease response and healthcare capacity. It stands as a testament to the strong partnership between Austria and Indonesia and the value of international cooperation in building resilient, future-oriented healthcare infrastructure.

Congratulations to all partners and stakeholders whose dedication made this important project possible. 🙌

Strengthening Austria–Timor-Leste relations 🇦🇹🤝🇹🇱

From 14–16 June, Chargé d’Affaires a.i. Michael Wislocki visited Dili for a series of meetings to further deepen Austria’s partnership with Timor-Leste.

Together with Austria’s Honorary Consul, Stefan Hlavac, he paid a courtesy visit to Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation H.E. Jesuina Gomes. Discussions focused on bilateral cooperation, including Austria’s support for young Timorese women entrepreneurs through UNICEF, scholarships, and training opportunities in Austria for Timorese diplomats and police officers. Both sides also exchanged views on multilateral issues, including Austria’s election to the UN Security Council, Timor-Leste’s ASEAN membership, and its LDC Chairship.

Mr. Wislocki also met with Minister of Health, H.E. Dr. Élia A.A. dos Reis Amaral, to discuss cooperation in the health sector, as well as with Minister of Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture, H.E. Nelyo Isaac Sarmento, to explore collaboration in youth development, vocational training, cultural exchange, and Austria’s continued support for Timor-Leste’s regional integration within ASEAN.

The visit also included meetings with EU Delegation Chargé d’Affaires Christoph Sorg, UNICEF Representative Patricia DiGiovanni, UNDP Resident Representative Katyna Argueta, and the NGOs Pro-EMA and FOKUPERS to discuss Austria’s support for their programmes and ongoing cooperation across key development priorities.

The visit reaffirmed Austria’s commitment to deepening its partnership with Timor-Leste and advancing cooperation in education, health, sustainable development, culture, youth empowerment, and women’s economic empowerment.

Selamat pagi dari Jakarta. 🌅

Six days ago, Ambassador Alexander Rieger, together with his wife Maria and daughter Stephanie, stepped off the plane into the warm Jakarta afternoon. This morning, he returned to the Foreign Ministry at Pejambon to present the copie d'usage of his Letters of Credence to H.E. Saud Purwanto Krisnawan — the first formal step in taking up his mandate as Austria's Ambassador to Indonesia, Timor-Leste and ASEAN.

Years ago, long before this assignment was on any agenda, the Ambassador was already drawn to this country — to the gamelan, to the patience of batik, to the quiet discipline of pencak silat, to a culture that has taught the world how to hold many faiths, many islands, and many languages in one embrace. Bhinneka Tunggal Ika — united in diversity. It is a true privilege for him to now be posted in Indonesia.

Austria and Indonesia have been friends since 1954 — sahabat lama. In a world that is changing very quickly, that kind of patient, decades-long silaturahmi between two democracies is something to cherish and to build on. Two republics. Two cultures of music and craftsmanship. Two countries that believe that dialogue — between religions, between peoples, between economies — is not a luxury but a way of life.

To DG Krisnawan and his team — terima kasih banyak for a welcome that was unmistakably Indonesian. To Indonesia and its people — selamat berkenalan. The Ambassador and his family are very happy to be here.

The work begins. 🇦🇹🤝🇮🇩
