Our new bathroom will be ready within the week. Now we have two units and soon a third. Each is strategically located so that the wastewater benefits the surrounding landscape. The reason for several units is so that campers and visitors can use the bathroom without disturbing house guests, and to prevent waiting lines :) the new toilet is a pedestal for this who prefer to sit rather than use the local squat. The wastewater from the toilet will be treated nearby and the water used by vetiver grass and sugar cane that we can later cut and use as mulch and for A biogas digester. Much thanks to our team for putting this building together.

Our friend Jhon Teguh is back from Earthship Island and it's looking great this week. It's already a closed building and the team continue on the work to finish the exteriors. I will be out there next week to give some advice on climate and soil appropriate landscaping species. Congratulations to the Earthship biotecture team! We can't wait for the final unveiling!

Our moringa hedge is in. 35 poles of moringa oleifera. Over the next few months we'll steady it up and make further improvements such as compost and biochar addition, trenching coconut husks to conserve water, and adding new species to this productive hedgerow. Pictured here is the Moringa tree bottom right, and the other three are Aloe Vera , dragon fruit and Tulsi basil. We've established in small trials that these grow well here. Our next task is trying to find enough stock to plant out this area. This hedge will focus as shade, shelter, forage and vegetable, provide honey, fruit and beverages.

This week our team is sourcing cuttings for a 35 metre Moringa internal fence. This will be our seedstock for local Moringa. Later we can import other types from India. Moringa is a tasty and productive vegetable in this climate, the easiest to grow and the toughest. We are looking forward to Moringa pods and leaves in our kitchen, and so are our chickens and dog. We will be feeding the hedge with compost and seaweeds collected from the beach for full spectrum minerals

Halfway through breaking ground for our test plots for field crops. These 1 ara (10m X 10m ) plots are to be used to test out different crops for the wet season. We are on extremely difficult soils but that will help determine the hardiness of various crops. Soon we will add manures and charcoal and various mulches to prepare the site. The first seeds we have are green and blue corn, pearl millet and some types of beans. We don't expect a great yield but we do expect to sort the varieties that can yield here from those we should forget. It's a trial by ordeal ;) as we keep improving the soil over the years it'll improve.

It's almost one year since we started, there's sure been a lot of improvement. It encourages me to think positively of the next two years. Change doesn't usually happen in a linear curve, so seeing this response in only one season is .. wow. From my experience when one transitions a degraded landscape it takes 3 good growing seasons and then it takes off, with the first year being the most shakey. It gathers its strength and then boom, flips

Our place from Space. You can see the trees planted so far with their rice husk mulch around them house and cabins. Starting to make out the few hand dug swales that will continue to be expanded. Looking great!

Many thanks to our current guests, the crew of the Earthship biotecture crew who are working hard building Earthships on Gili Kenawa nearby. Please check out their page and other links. We will be over to the Island this weekend to check out their work. The response from the West Sumbawa Regency has been really positive and impressed with International focus on West Sumbawa.

The Yellow Crotalaria we found growing here by itself and broadcast it's seeds. As well as being pretty the Crotalaria or Rattlepod genus are good at making soils more fertile by adding carbon and nitrogen.
The top right is a Myoporum montanum, also a local species that survives on account of its ability to resist goats and grow in poor sandy and salty soils. Below right is a sweet Selection of Acerola cherry, we are looking forward to future harvests of these delicious fruits.
