We’re excited to share that funding has now been awarded under our €2.5 million Decarbonising Zones (DZ) Scheme.

This initiative, supported by the Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment and co‑funded by the Government of Ireland and the European Union, will help Local Authorities deliver real, on-the-ground climate action projects in their communities.

From restoring biodiversity and enhancing green spaces, to improving flood resilience and supporting nature-based solutions, these projects will help create healthier, more climate‑ready communities across the region.

We’re looking forward to seeing these projects come to life over the coming months!

The NWRA was delighted to take part in the 3rd interregional meeting of the Project in Prague in early June 2026.

Patrick Devine and Fiona Timoney represented the NWRA, joined by stakeholders James Brett (Galway City Council) and John McFeely (Donegal County Council).

Hosted by the Prague Institute of Planning and Development, the visit included engaging seminars on:

🔹 Turning policy into action
🔹 Practical tools and methods for implementation

The programme also featured inspiring study visits, including insights into Prague’s development policies, a tour of the CAMP urban planning centre, and a visit to a major brownfield redevelopment site.

A highlight was a specially organised sightseeing tram tour showcasing Prague’s approach to sustainable urban development 🚋🌱

A valuable and inspiring visit — we now look forward to welcoming partners to Galway City in April 2027!

📌 New data shows that the Northern and Western Region of Ireland is one of the most educated regions in the EU27.

In the latest "Regional Economic Briefing Note", the NWRA has analysed new data from Eurostat on higher education attainment rates, with the key findings being:

👩‍🏫 The Northern and Western Region of Ireland was the 17th most educated region in the EU27 in 2025.

📊 The region would outperform significant regional economies such as Noord-Holland in the Netherlands – which encompasses Amsterdam – Comunidad de Madrid in Spain, Berlin in Germany and Helsinki-Uusimaa in Finland.

📉 The Northern and Western Region’s ranking was down 5 places relative to the 2024 rankings.

The NWRA’s “Regional Economic Briefing Note” aims to provide a brief update on the latest data releases on the Northern and Western Region of Ireland.

The National Trail Conference was one of the Good Practices that we were proud to share through the GREENHEALTH-Interreg Europe project. Emma O’Hagan, Rural Recreation Officer with Leitrim Development Company, reflects on how the conference brought together volunteers, community groups, landowners and public organisations from across Ireland to celebrate and support our recreational trails and outdoor infrastructure.

From discussions on walking, cycling and kayaking to exploring accessibility, wellbeing and community participation, the conference highlighted the many ways outdoor recreation contributes to healthier people, stronger communities and a greater connection to place.
