Ballinskelligs Inshore Rescue

Ballinskelligs Inshore Rescue (BIR) was established by members of the local community in 2006, in response to a drowning tragedy in Ballinskelligs Bay. It is an Irish Registered Charity Registration Number CHY17175

The service is manned by a team of local volunteers who contribute their time and effort without any personal reward other than the knowledge that their

commitment, training and equipment will, at sometime, be of assistance to someone in distress at sea. It has no paid employees and no payroll costs. In their own time the crew members take part in training which includes emergency response, boat handling, search & rescue, sea survival, navigation, and rescue co-ordination with the Irish Coastguard and the Irish Coastguard Helicopter Rescue Service. BIR is a part of Community Rescue Boats Ireland, a nationwide group of independent voluntary rescue boats which are trained and administered by Irish Water Safety. BIR is a declared asset of the Irish Coastguard available to respond as directed by Marine Rescue Co-ordination Services to any emergencies in the Ballinskelligs & St Finans Bay area. BIR is audited for Performance & Equipment by both the Irish CoastGuard and the Irish Water Safety . Ballinskelligs Inshore Rescue Limited an Irish registered (424612) not for profit company is the legal entity which operates Ballinskelligs Inshore Rescue. Its audited accounts are published each year

A sincere thank you to Joe McGill of Radio Kerry Saturday Supplement for having Ballinskelligs Inshore Rescue on the show alongside Cathal P Walshe PRO of the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle, and the other Tier One charities benefiting from this year’s Ring of Kerry Cycle event. It was wonderful to highlight the incredible work being carried out by so many deserving charities and the positive impact they continue to make in communities and beyond. We truly appreciate the opportunity to share our story and celebrate the spirit of support and volunteering that makes this event so special.

Tune in at 9 am to Radio Kerry to hear from the beneficiaries of the 2026 Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle. Thanks to Joe for highlighting this wonderful event for all the wonderful charities involved.

On the Saturday Supplement from 9am with Joe McGill we’ll hear from the Charities involved in this year’s Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle. We’ll also hear from Lesley Bond the author of a new book called Blasket Bound. Lesley and her now husband were the first couple to sign up for the six-month stint as caretakers on Great Blasket island. We’ll also hear episode five in our series, Voices of the Future in Kerry. In this programme, Shonagh O’Sullivan shares a personal reflection inspired by her TEDx Talk, “Behind the Selfie – Who Are We Really?”.
