Our granddaughter sat in the house where her granddad, great grandparents, great-great grandparents, great-great-great grandparents and great-great-great-great grandparents were born and lived! We are so lucky to have this peace of our family history! ☘️🏡🔥🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒💗

Halloween originates from the old Celtic festival of Samhain. It was a time when the veil between the human world and the other world was at its thinnest and this ghosts, spirits and the dead could wander the Earth.

Because of heightened magical and supernatural activity, measures were taken to try avoid unpleasant interactions. It was common to leave out offerings and turnips were carved with terrifying faces to try ward off any malevolent spirits. Walking alone was avoided as much as possible but if it was necessary to go out, people would carry Jack-o-lanterns and disguise themselves in frightful costumes to try trick any ghouls they might encounter.

Samhain was also a very important time for remembering family and friends who had died. An extra place was always set at the table in their honour in case loved ones returned home to visit their living relations. Using this as inspiration, we decided to carve some pumpkins, light a fire and remember those who have gone on before us. Wishing everyone a very Happy Halloween!

In Ireland, Palm Sunday used to be referred to as ‘Domhnach an Iúir’ which translates as Yew Sunday. This is because it was common to use more widely available evergreens as a replacement for the holy palms. Some parishes continue with this tradition. This one was handed out in St Feichin's church, Ballisodare
