Haven't had the time post recently. We've been exceptionally busy doing the following;
clearing up previous crops and transplanting lettuce and spinach. Rocket and Oriental greens are directly sown.
The covers on the tunnels are off to allow the beds to be rejuvenated by the rain we've had. They will be covered over next week, as we should have plenty of rain over the coming days.
We haven't had too many volunteers at the walled garden this summer, notably through the high season months. This led to a lot of weeds taking over and going to seed. Something that hasn't happened to us in quite a number of years. So we'll have to compost heavily this autumn/winter and woodchip the pathways.
The tunnels are pretty flexible in relation to their covers. On, they provide additional heat and protection from the elements. But taking them off also allows the rain in, watering the entire tunnel quickly and preventing the soil becoming too parched.
It's a delicate balance and something we have yet to master. Keeping the ropes on, allows the covers to be erected and taken down quickly. We can have the several tunnels done in the morning before lunchtime.
