New Irish Land Commission

New Irish Land Commission After the Land War a Commission was set up to 'encourage ' the Landlords to sell the land to the tenants. Why cant this be done to the banks?

It's was Compulsory Purchase Order in all but name. A fair price was worked our between what the land was worth and what folk could pay. As a measure of the poverty of the time, a three generation term of 100 years was worked out. This could be done again...

The money the bank loaned out to but farms and homes was borrowed from another bank. This is the principle. While they should take a haircut

on this too as they have to pay it back to a bigger bank most of it will have to be paid somehow. The intrest has to be forgotten. Say a 250000 mortgage over 20 years is paying €1.50 per thousand per week. That's 375 a week in payments out of a family income of 500 take home if both parties are working low paid jobs. Spread it over 100 years (five times the term) and repayments are reduced 80% putting money back into the economy, securing the family home, and guaranteed home for children. Say children don't want the home? Make a new category of property which I call 'Bonded' in addition to Freehold and Leasehold. The property can be sold for a nominal sum with the mortgage terms already agreed. Buyer pays 75% of the payments already made and pays off the remainder.

Its the first plank of a campaign to help homeowners to stop evictions, and I hope Uplift / MyUplift will be a strong part of that story.

Plank 1 - force ALL involved to carry ID, have licences, and share bodycam footage
Plank 2 - personal liability to anyone who they hurt carrying out their orders
Plank 3 - if the bank want to sell the mortgage for less than its face value, it must be on first option to the holder, who if they want it, can get the state to buy it and sell it to them over a more manageable timeframe. This can be financed through the Lottory, Prizebonds etc. Profits from it should help it become self financing in the medium term.

EVICTION must NEVER be an option.

Retail security guards must prove they are trustowrthy and not ciminals before being allowed in the sector. Ditto with Door Supervisors. Why not the heavys in a Bailiffs Posse?

Not our preferred option but a step in the right direction.

Not our preferred option but a step in the right direction.

The Master of the High Court has described advice given by the Taoiseach to a person facing repossession as “a sick joke” and said the Government is “misinformed” about the situation impacting many families.

Our current land difficulties forseen a hundred years ago, bar it was not thought then it would be the banks that would be the landlords...

" The land would be mortgaged by the poor or improvident, and the wealthy would again accumulate large estates. Then absentee landlords and discontented tenants, rack-rents, agents, middlemen, evictions and agrarian outrages will all arise as before, till some future Government will again be asked to advance money to buy out the new landlords, and transfer the land to those who will at that time be the tenants. "

The new Housing Co Op act of Mattie McGrath is the nearest to our proposal that we have seen so far.

Its not a FF initiative, Right2Homes - sister orginisation to Right2Water are behind it, with suport from McGrath an Independent and Cowen of FF.

Sad to see Michael Martin wont come in behind it. It has our full backing.
