“Antiquities of Belmore Mountain” Event 2nd April 2023
Good dry weather made for a splendid walk on Sunday for an enthusiastic group of walkers keen to rediscover the hidden megalithic gems of County Fermanagh’s Belmore Mountain. Geopark Tour Guide Andy King lead the group up the long winding track through the Belmore Forest to the limestone escarpment that overlooks Letterbreen. Outstanding views of Cuilcagh Mountain and Lower Lough Macnean can be enjoyed here, with much of the further Ulster landscape to be seen.
Hidden amongst the plantations on the mountain here are an ancient Fort, a large and well preserved ceremonial Ring Cairn, probably dating from the Bronze Age, and the remains of the “Eagle’s Knoll” Neolithic passage cairn. The passage cairn is one of a small number in Ireland that had its entrance aligned to the sun at summer solstice. A number of Greater Spotted Woodpeckers were to be heard making their loud drumming to attract a mate in the Lodgepole Pines here. A big thank you to everyone for making it such an enjoyable day.
