Power Outage

The ESB have notified us of a power outage from 10.00am to 3.00pm on Monday 22nd June, 2026. The Glendalough Visitor Centre and toilets will therefore have to remain closed for the duration of the power interruption. The Monastic Site and walking trails will all still be accessible and Staff will be on duty.

The end of Troy and York marked the beginning of the USA…………….

The headstones of James Troy and Eloner York in Glendalough record that they departed this life in 1776 in the same year as the new nation of the United States of America was born 250 years ago. All of this happened over 1200 years after the time of St Kevin which puts into perspective the long history to be explored in the valley of Glendalough.

I predict a riot !

Today is the Patron Day of Saint Kevin. In the 1800’s, the feast day of Saint Kevin on the 3rd June was marked by the Patron (Pattern) which developed into a riotous affair with a fairground atmosphere and faction fighting. Sir William Wilde referenced the mayhem in his writings in 1873 when he recounted his youthful experience of Glendalough. Matters got so bad that in 1862, Cardinal Cullen issued instructions for the curtailment of the Patron.
No riots are predicted today as we celebrate Saint Kevin’s Day in the serene setting of this beautiful heritage site.

Faeries, Food and a Pharmacy

The Hawthorn is starting to bloom around St Mary’s Church. This gnarled tree is traditionally seen as connected with superstitions involving an unseen world and faeries but is also associated with nutrition (young leaves and berries) and medicine (treatment of heart and circulatory disorders).

Figaro comes to Glendalough !

Actually, over 40 Figaros came to Glendalough today as we were delighted to welcome members of the Nissan Figaro Club. Their pristine cars added quite the spectacle to our car park and attracted many admirers.
We wish them well on their onward travels.

National Biodiversity Week 2026

A huge thank you to our Guide (and Beekeeper), John Price, who delivered a fascinating talk to a very interested group of people. He touched on many different aspects of Beekeeping from the time of Brehon Laws to the present day and had different equipment on display. John created a great buzz in the Visitor Centre today !

We'll cross that bridge when we come to it........but not for a few days.

Some final repairs will be carried out to the footbridge at the Deer Stone on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday 11th, 12th & 13th May next. During this time the bridge will be closed to facilitate these essential repairs.
We would ask for patience and cooperation as access to the Monastery will be via the Monastic Gateway and access to the Lakes and Trails will via the Green road.
We apologise for any inconvenience.
