One hundred and seventy-nine years ago today, Daniel O’Connell died in Genoa.

The chariot that once carried the Liberator through cheering crowds later travelled empty at the head of the funeral cortege that brought him to his final resting place in Glasnevin Cemetery. Today, that same chariot is carefully preserved at Derrynane House — a moving reminder of one of Ireland’s greatest sons.
