Join us on August 30 at Derrynane House for a very special programme, designed to throw the spotlight onto the O'Connell women - not just supporting actors, but stars in their own right.

The morning will begin with an intimate look into the life of Mary O’Connell. Sophie Twomey, knowledgeable Derrynane tour guide will set the scene, sharing the captivating, personal history of the woman behind the name at 11:00am.

Join Jessica Fahy, Art Historian, at 11:45am for an expert visual analysis of the O’Connell women portraits. Renowned for her exceptional insight, she will guide us through the symbolism, artistry and hidden clues painted on to the canvases that hang on our walls today.

At 1:00pm Nicola Fitz-simon, great, great, great granddaughter of Ellen O’Connell Fitz-simon will be presenting Derrynane House with the loan of a family heirloom: a brooch featured in a portrait of Ellen.

After an interval for refreshments, a guided tour of the Meadow Walk will be led by local poet Paddy Bushe. Paddy rediscovered the Meadow Walk after he found reference to it in an 1832 poem by Daniel O’Connell’s daughter Ellen, and it has recently been restored by the OPW. Please note, hiking gear and a maximum of 30 people on the walk itself – pre-book separately via [email protected]. There will be an introduction at Derrynane House first, for those interested in the background but not the walk.

Please book for these FREE events by emailing [email protected]
