There’s no better classroom than the riverbank👣

As part of the , sponsored by the Local Authority Waters Programme (LAWPRO Local Authority Waters Programme ), 6th class students from Scoil Saidhbhín in Cahersiveen (Co.Kerry) spent a quality time at the Fertha River wetlands getting hands-on with nature.

Working alongside Cahersiveen Tidy Towns Cahersiveen Tidy Town's , and with great support from Elis and Orla from SeaSynergy LH Marine & Sea Synergy , the students explored the shoreline, spotted wetland and species, and learned how these places support both wildlife and local communities.

Big thanks to Cournanes Coaches for providing the transport🚍.

Off we go — wrapping up an unforgettable summer with CoastLink Project by Cahersiveen Tidy Towns ! 🌊

From our first snorkel to the final beach clean, this project has been powered by the incredible energy of our volunteers. Thank you all for showing up, diving in, and making a difference for our coast and community.

Big thanks to our dear friends

for always getting us there — your support made this journey possible 🚌

Thanks a lot to LH Marine & Sea Synergy for the training provided and genuine support along with South Kerry Development Partnership CLG 🤝

It might be the last field session of the summer, but the impact will last far beyond.

📝 Litter Recording = Real Data💻

Our CoastLink Project by Cahersiveen Tidy Towns Crew didn’t just clean the beach — we recorded what we found, where, and how often.

Using a 20x20m survey grid, we logged litter types and density to help build an accurate picture of what’s ending up on our shores.

This isn’t just cleanup. It’s environmental data collection — and it’s all done by volunteers.

🌊 Black Strand: Mapped, Cleaned, and Cared for — by CoastLink Project by Cahersiveen Tidy Towns

On 12 July, our CoastLink volunteer crew took on Black Strand Beach.

We mapped the coastline, recorded litter every 20 metres, and collected what didn’t belong.

All of it logged. All of it powered by community.

This is citizen science. This is action. This is CoastLink Project.

🌊 CoastLink in Action – Exploring & Recording Coastline
(Our Mapping Session at Portmagee Channel Recap..)

This session was all about learning, mapping, and diving into marine life — with the guidance of the brilliant team from SeaSynergy.

We kicked things off by sorting our shoreline finds into trays — seaweed, crabs, coastal plants, shells, and more.

🦀 Every piece showed just how alive and diverse our coastline really is.

🗺Next, we mapped the coast in 20-metre sections, recording what we found at each point. All of this data goes toward national biodiversity records — turning local action into national impact.

This is what CoastLink is all about:

🧭 Mapping. Recording. Protecting.
❗️ Because every species counts.
💚Our coastline deserves to be understood and preserved.

📅 Next field mapping session: Saturday, 12 July
📍 Come join us — everyone’s welcome!

🦪 Can you spot a survivor? Only 5% remain.

Native oysters have dropped 95% in numbers —
but the Portmagee Channel still holds hope.

Let’s map, monitor and bring them back.

🌟 Ocean life up close!

🌊On June 28th, when diving into the secret life beneath the waves… our CoastLink Project snorkelling team captured an extraordinary glimpse of the marine world in Portmagee Channel — many thanks to our volunteer photographer and snorkeller, Anna Kellagher 📸💙

These stunning images aren’t just beautiful — they’re DATA, helping us map biodiversity and monitor marine health in real time as part of our ongoing citizen science project.

Here’s what we discovered in this living underwater gallery:

🧡 Common Starfish (Asterias rubens) – crawling over kelp beds, its surface covered in tiny tube feet and spines.

🪼 Compass Jellyfish – elegantly drifting, its delicate arms trailing like silk threads.

🦑 Fluted Sea Squirts (Ascidians) – filtering water through their tunicates, they look almost alien.

🪸 Tube-dwelling Anemone – its crown of tentacles sways hypnotically in the current.

🦈 Catshark / Nursehound – a rare sight! Resting on the sandy seabed, its speckled skin camouflaged.

🧽 Sea Slugs & Sponges – gelatinous, bright or ghostly pale, dotting the rocks and telling us the sea is alive.

🫧 Eggcases & Juvenile habitats – proof that this coastline isn’t just alive — it’s reproducing.

Each image is a reason to care. Each species a reminder: we protect what we love and understand.

This is why CoastLink Project exists. And why we snorkel, observe, map and share.

📍 CoastLink Project by Cahersiveen Tidy Towns is a community-led marine mapping project by Cahersiveen Tidy Town's , supported by SICAP 2024–2028, South Kerry Development Partnership CLG (SKDP) and LH Marine & Sea Synergy .
