Cahir Castle

Cahir Castle Welcome to the official page for Cahir Castle, an OPW managed Heritage site. It is one of Ireland's largest and best preserved castles.

Once the stronghold of the powerful Butler family, the castle retains its impressive keep, tower and much of its original defensive structure. It is situated on a rocky island on the River Suir. The castle's attractions include an excellent audio-visual show which informs visitors about the castle.

We were delighted here in Cahir Castle to have a lovely visit from Roz Purcell during her weekend back home here in Tipperary. Roz shared some tips on how to make the most out of a weekend in this wonderful county. We were thrilled that she made time to visit us here in Cahir Castle as well as so many of the other beautiful spots around the Premier County.

A hugely entertaining night was had recently in the beautiful surroundings of the Banqueting Hall at Cahir Castle - all were thoroughly charmed by the music and stories of Jim Ryan and his daughter Cáit - better known as Jim O' The Mill and family. The Banqueting Hall was filled and the audience were captivated from beginning to end, by the wonderful melodies and the heart-warming tales, delivered so endearingly by Jim and Cáit

The recent lecture given by Professor Diarmaid Ferriter on "Politics, Piety, Population and the Plough: Ireland 1926" on Friday April 24th was a huge success. It took place in Cahir Castle in the beautiful setting of the Banquet Hall. This event kick-started the running series of "Culture at the Castle" events, brought to us by Cahir Social and Historical Society. On the night, it was a full house and all who attended thoroughly enjoyed the added surprise element of the spectacular vocals from Diarmaid. It was an extremely informative and intellectually engaging discussion, appreciated by all who attended.
