Last week, we were delighted to welcome Rory Bunce, Cork County Library Local Studies Librarian, with his fascinating talk on the history of the Normans and their enduring influence and legacy in Cork.
The event, held in Carrigaline Library, offered an insight into a pivotal period of our shared history and highlighted the rich European connections that have helped shape Cork over the centuries.
This event forms part of Cork County Council’s Cultural Programme for Ireland’s Presidency of the European Union 2026, celebrating Cork’s long-standing European links.

Earlier this week, Europe Direct Carrigaline was delighted to welcome students from across Cork and Kerry to participate in our annual Soapbox competition.

We’d like to extend our congratulations to Izabel Maria from Edmund Rice College Carrigaline, winner of the Under 16 category, and Emma O'Sullivan from Kenmare Community School, winner of the Over 17 category. Congratulations also to our runners-up Mark Daly, Nabella Islam, Marian O'Mahony and Aoibhe Dignam.

The standard of speaking across both categories was exceptional, with participants delivering powerful and thought-provoking speeches.

Our regional winners will now go on to represent Cork and Kerry at the National Soapbox Final, which will take place at the Royal College of Physicians in Dublin on 3rd December 2026.

A huge thank you to all participants, teachers, judges and supporters who helped make the event such a success.

Europe Direct Carrigaline is inviting entries for the Europe Direct Soapbox Public Speaking Competition 2026, offering participants the opportunity to showcase their public speaking skills and engage in debate on a contemporary European issue.

The regional final for Cork and Kerry will take place on Monday, 12th October 2026 in Carrigaline Library.

This year's debate topic is: “Culture is at the heart of what it means to be European. But is Ireland culturally closer to Strasbourg or Sydney?” Entrants are invited to deliver a three-minute speech either for or against the motion. Speeches may be presented in either Irish or English.

The competition is open to participants of all ages, with two categories:
· 16 years and under
· 17 years and over

Regional winners will receive an iPad or Samsung tablet, sponsored by the European Commission Representation in Ireland. Competitors from both age categories will also have the opportunity to compete for the overall national prizes.

The closing date for entries is Monday, 5th October 2026.
