โ€˜Sands of Timeโ€™: Castleisland Rectory Resurfaces after more than a Century

Castleisland District Heritage is delighted to add a watercolour painting to its archive, the gift of John McCarthy of Co Wicklow. The artwork depicts Castleisland Rectory and grounds in 1918, one century on from its date of construction in 1818.[1]

John McCarthy recently contacted Castleisland District Heritage to ask about the history of the parsonage, and explained how the painting had come into his possession:

We brought the painting from Wexford to our home in West Wicklow, put it away for safekeeping, then forgot about it. So, 18 years later during a bout of spring cleaning, it resurfaced. We were still convinced that it was too nice to dispose of. As I am now retired, I was tasked with doing some research in an effort to find a permanent home for it.

It has been established that the date of composition of the painting, 1918, was during the ministry of Rev George Browne, native of Lislea, Co Derry.[2] Rev Browne, who graduated from Dublin University in 1909, was appointed rector of Castleisland and Ballycushlane in 1914, having earlier served as curate in Tralee.[3]

He remained in Castleisland until 1923. During his decade in the town, Rev Browne lived at the rectory with his wife, Georgina Sophia Browne and two young children, William and Kathleen, both born in Kerry.[4]

The artist of Castleisland Rectory is open to speculationโ€ฆโ€ฆ..
