I am very happy to announce that, in collaboration with the North Wexford Historical Society, funds are being provided by the Heritage Council to survey the structural condition of the Lookout Post at Kilmichael Point. This is the first step in our efforts to protect and preserve LOP10, which is an important part of our local wartime heritage.
"Lookout Post 10 tells a local, national and international story of the defence of Ireland during a period of unparalleled national danger. The coastwatchers who manned LOP10 were local men who were on continuous watch from 1939 to 1945 guarding Ireland’s wartime front line waiting for an invasion which never came. LOP10 and its crew saw the second world war off Ireland’s east coast at first hand.
LOP10 was one of the look out posts which tracked the course of the Luftwaffe aircraft which bombed Dublin’s North Strand in May 1941. It is thus an important part of one of the most important moments of Ireland’s experience of the Second World War.
We are now 84 years after the start of the second world war and there is an ever dwindling group alive who remember the conflict that took place off our shores and often in our skies. As living memory of the second world slips away, LOP 10 becomes a structure of ever-increasing value worth maintaining, protecting and exploring as part of our military heritage and as part of the modern history of North Wexford."
