Cavan Women's Refuge Campaign

Cavan Women's Refuge Campaign We are campaigning for adequate services for women and children experiencing homelessness or fleeing domestic violence in Cavan. This is not good enough.

It was announced in 2021 that funding would be made available for a domestic violence refuge in Monaghan Town, which is yet to be opened. This is brilliant news but despite this women and children in Cavan will still have to travel between 50minutes to 1hr 20mins in order to reach safety. Many women feeling domestic violence may also be faced with financial abuse and may be unable to get themselve

s and their children onto public transport, we must consider the fact that many do not drive. 9 counties in Ireland have no refuge, this is unacceptable every county should have a refuge space for those fleeing domestic violence and abuse. Ireland has state obligations to provide 1 refuge space per 10,000 women. This obligation is not being met. We need assistance in Cavan and we need it now. Please do everything you can to demand better for the women and girls of Cavan. In 2019 284 women in Cavan and Monaghan area called the Garda reporting domestic abuse. These stats rose significantly from the beginning of the pandemic.

Did you know that if you’re experiencing domestic violence, you have a right to leave from work?

📅 Full time workers have a right to 5 days paid leave. If you work part-time, you’ll get a bit less.

ℹ️ For example, if you work half-time, you’ll get 2.5 days. This is the legal minimum, but your employer might give you more.

💭 You don’t have to be working in your job for a certain amount of time to use this leave, and you don’t have to use it all at once.

🫶🏼 Domestic violence leave can support you in getting help discreetly. You can use this leave to:
📍 Get medical help
📍 Access domestic violence services
📍 Get counselling
📍 Move temporarily or permanently
📍 Get a safety order from the courts
📍 Get legal advice
📍 Get help from the Gardaí

NWC strongly welcomes news from Government on the introduction of a Free Travel Scheme for survivors of domestic violence and their children.

The decision to leave an abuser is never easy.

Initiatives like this contribute to addressing the poverty survivors often endure as a result of the abuse they are subjected to.

Practical barriers like the cost of travelling for work, school, healthcare, psychological support or legal advice can add financial pressure. This move is a step in alleviating some of that financial burden.

Government has approved the drafting of legislation which will allow for information sharing between An Garda Síochána and schools in order to strengthen protection for children impacted by violence in the home.

The General Scheme of the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences, Domestic Violence and International Instruments) Bill 2025 includes measures to allow Gardai to inform a designated person in a school that a domestic violence incident has occurred in a pupil’s home – similar to the Operation Encompass early intervention strategy already in place in Northern Ireland.

It has been established to ensure a child’s school will be informed at the appropriate time that a domestic violence incident has occurred in the home of the child. The school is made aware so that the child can receive additional support in their care and learning following the incident.

Cathy Bennett TD Thank you for passionately high lighting the lack of services that have been promised and promised yet not delivered. How much trauma has occurred to women and children stuck in houses filled with domestic violence rather then love and safety during this 12 year period 💔
