Old MacDonald had a signing farm

This was a big hit in class this week. The parents loved it, and adding signs makes a very repetitive song fun for grown-ups again!

DOG: pat your hip twice
CAT: hand by your cheek, like whiskers
BIRD: fingers at your mouth, like a beak
PIG: swivel your index finger at your nose
COW: index fingers up as horns
HORSE: bounce your interlinked N-shapes
CROCODILE: snap your hands together
PENGUIN: hands at your hips, with a wobble

Tip: start with 2 or 3 animals and build from there.

Did you know I started Clever Little Handies when my youngest was just 7 months old? 👶💛

I know how tricky it can be to juggle family life and finances. Maybe you're looking at rising childcare costs and wondering how you'll make it work. Or perhaps you're not quite ready to return to your old job, but you can't afford not to work either.

What if there was another option?

Running your own baby sign classes could be a lovely way to earn an income, work around family life and build something of your own, without necessarily having to return to the 9–5.

I've spent almost 8 years building Clever Little Handies, and I'm now looking to connect with people who'd love to bring baby sign classes to families in their own local area. 🤲

🎶 Did you know you can teach your baby to sign while singing nursery rhymes?

"The Wheels on the Bus" is one of our favourite songs to use in class because babies love the repetition, and it makes practising signs so natural!

Here's a simple sign to try at home this week: the sign for BUS. Extend both arms out to the sides with palms facing down, and gently move them like a steering wheel as you sing. Do it each time the chorus comes around and watch your little one start to copy you! 👶🤲

Baby sign doesn't need to be complicated. Even a few minutes a day of singing and signing together can make a real difference to early communication before your baby's first words arrive.

Next up in my Halloween blog is Causey Farm

We haven't actually been to Causey at Halloween, but we have been during the summer holidays and had some brilliant days there.

One of our visits involved bog jumping, which was absolutely brilliant. It was also absolutely freezing!

I went a 2 and a 4 year old, looking back, I probably should have brought another pair of adult hands. One didn't like the muck and was bawling from the get-go, while the other got a fright when the tractor jolted forward while we were on the hay ride.

There were a lot of tears all round but it was still a brilliant day, just one of those parenting moments where you realise that sometimes an extra adult really is worth their weight in gold!

Then I went back in 2020 with my 2, 6 and 7year olds, but this time I put a call out to the WhatsApp parent groups.

Our kids hadn't been on school tours that year because of the lockdowns, so over the summer holidays about 10 or 15 of us mums rallied the troops and some took extra kids and suddenly we had this huge tribe heading off together.

It was brilliant but my car decided to break down on the way there.

I had to flag down various mums to take my kids so they wouldn't miss out, while I managed to get the car pushed off the road and into someone's driveway. I rang my Dad, popped the bonnet and gave everything a bit of a bang with the thing for taking the nuts off the wheels. I used to have a campervan that sometimes needed a bit of coaxing to get started, so apparently I had developed a technique.

And somehow, it worked.

The car started, we made it to Causey, and had a brilliant day. As we were leaving, my Mum and Dad arrived into the car park. They had decided to take a spin down to Trim just in case the car wouldn't start again because they didn't want me stranded with three littles.

So while I can't personally tell you what their Halloween event is like, I can tell you that Causey Farm knows how to put on a good day out, and it is definitely somewhere we would like to get to for Halloween at some stage.

Feature Friday brings us to Clonfert Pet Farm , and the timing couldn’t be better with Halloween creeping closer! 🎃

We’ve been going to Halloween for years and it’s always a winner with my gang. The haunted house is a particular favourite (although I’m not sure whether I enjoy it quite as much as they do! 😂).

Between the fairground rides, spooky disco, face painting and all the Halloween fun, there’s something for everyone. It’s become one of those things we look forward to every year.

Although I have a feeling my older two might soon be moving from the audience to the cast… I think they’d make excellent recruits for the haunted house! 👻😂

If you’ve never been, keep an eye on their Halloween events. They really do go all out!
