Killanena's Hidden Dead

Killanena's Hidden Dead Who are we? Our Objective

This group has a strong desire to reconnect the humanity of our hidden dead with the living people of their parish.

We are a project team who are dedicated to the mission of lifting memories of our enforced hidden dead of hundreds of years wherever they may lay in the parish out of darkness and into the light of everyday parish life. Through our website and Facebook we want to engage in a conversation with people at home and all over the world that have a connection with the parish of Killanena and surrounding

town lands in county Clare. A bonus for our team will be to speak to anyone who has a connection to Keane’s Kyle, one of the main graveyards of our hidden dead.

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to our team, Killanena’s Hidden Dead. This team has come together to try and reconnect the hidden men, women and children buried in Keanes Kyle, back to humanity. Our goal is to mentally and emotionally lift the memories of our hidden dead out of the darkness and into the light of our parish daily life.
The top priority for this group is to address the terrible shame of the inhumanity which for centuries has lead us to believe that we must secretly bury our unbaptised children and other supposedly tainted family members that have been given to us by God in unidentified unholy holes in unconsecrated ground.
While we in the hidden dead project team understand the mechanics of church teachings on original sin we do not see that as the business of this project.
The creation of this project is based on the fact of Tommy ‘Coolvoor’ Broderick’s death, the story Flan Broderick has written in his fictional attempt to trace the footsteps of the Hidden Dead trip from Cromwell butchery in the 1600s to the tragedy in Coolvoors house in 1923 which lead to the burial of Uncle Tommy in Keanes Kyle.
In order for us to reach our goals we are hoping to collectively come together as a community and reconnect these hidden souls back to our daily lives. We wish to do this in several ways, beginning with the creation of a walkway from the main road leading down to Keanes Kyle. This both has metaphoric and physical meaning, as we are not only creating a physical pathway to visit our hidden dead, we are metaphorically building a road to reconnect them with our daily lives.

WHAT IS A HIDDEN DEAD GRAVE SITE?

This is a secret burial ground of ancient times. When you look at the main picture you will see what appears to be a fenced area of ground with stones scattered in a random fashion. In fact each of these stones although there is no words written on them give us highly valuable information.

Each of these no writing stones is a marker which tells us there is at least one maybe more bodies buried here at this exact spot. Each and every one of these stones tell us of a moment of unbearable heartbreak in many a parish house over a number of past century’s.

One of these stones tells us of a specific night of terror and heartbreak that happened in the house of my Grandparents James and Ellen (Coolvoor) Broderick on the 23rd of November 1923 nearly one hundred years ago. All these stones tell us that this is a graveyard site which has acted as

A child burial ground, (unconsecrated ground possibly going back to Pagan times)
A Killeen, (unconsecrated ground (probably of Christian times)
A Kyle, (consecrated ground) ( of Christian and Cromwell times)
The office of public works paperwork simply states that in 1834 the whole burial ground was a graveyard.
Note: Although the O.P.W. (Office of Public works) gives this date and description its representative archeologist Garoid O Conroy informed me that while the O.P.W know of this grave site it is not an officially registered graveyard.

The consecrated Kyle part of this graveyard has never been separately identified or registered as a consecrated burial ground due to the times that were in it when the consecration was performed. IE the clergy slaughtering times of Oliver Cromwell arguably the cruelest of all Englishmen to come to our Irish Shores.

WHEN?

DIFFICULT SEARCH FOR INFORMATION

I searched for but found it extremely difficult to find any written academic or religious history before 1834 which explained why:

Kyles came into existence
Consecrated Kyles were placed next to unconsecrated Child burial grounds / Killeens.
Unconsecrated Killeens were used to bury Baptised adults who did not die in a state of grace i.e. people who died through su***de or murder. Some families because of family history felt they had to bury their baptized child in these hidden sites us Coolvoor Brodericks being one of those families.
There is strong belief that although handicapped persons were baptized some catholic families in times gone by believing handicap to be a punishment buried their stricken relatives in these designated secret non human places.
Finally these places of unholy but convenient inhumanity not only exist in hidden away corners of parish fields they also exist within the walls of many institutions. I think it is fair to say that because of the nature of Government and religious business activities operated within these premises the numbers of hidden dead will be very high. However not all of these heartbreaking deaths will have a sinister history.

MAIN SOURCE OF ANECDOTAL EVIDENCE

Due to the lack of recorded evidence regarding hidden dead burial sites and how the Catholic church operated between the year 1600 and 1834 I decided to approach the Franciscan community for assistance. I thought to myself these guys came to Ireland with the Norman Invaders around the end of the 12th or the beginning of the 13th centuary. Right or wrong my logic was, this religious body unlike secular parish Catholic clergy of those days will have been under the protection of the predominantly Norman breed of English aristocrat.

My first stop was our local Friary their clergyman informed me that they would not hold that type of information locally. Our local Franciscan did however tell me that my best hope of help is to contact the keepers of their archives in their house of learning based in Killiney Dublin city. On a number of occasions I spoke to an individual at the house of learning. This man explained the difficulties the Catholic religious faced in those times not only in daily religious operations, even more terrifying was their struggle to stay alive due to persecution by Oliver Cromwell and his English forces.

WHO ARE WE?

We are a serious and determined project team who motivated by the sentiment you see in the picture are dedicated to the mission of reconnecting with the memories of our enforced hidden dead.

OUR OBJECTIVE OUR VISION

Bishop Willie Walsh provided the missing link of humanity to right a wrong that goes back as far as early Christian times; probably even pagan times. It was his act of humanity which allowed the priests of the Dioses of Killaloe to bless the grave sites of our hidden dead. On that day many years ago Bishop Willie threw in the humanity/ reconnection ball. From that moment the serious reconnection game was on.
