Very sad to report the passing of retired AFS Commander Michael Carroll. Michael was a true gentleman and a terrific Officer who served his community well. His love of our Green Goddess and commitment to the restoration of the appliance is well known. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this time. RIP.

Our thoughts are with all involved with the devastating fire in New York, particularly to those who lost their lives, their families and friends.

Investigators are reporting that an open door helped the spread of toxic smoke throughout the building.

If we can learn anything from this tragedy:

🔥 If you discover a fire in a building close the door on it and raise the alarm. This is the single most effective action you can take to slow the spread of fire and smoke.

🚪 If you live in an apartment block ensure that fire doors are kept closed at all times*. They should not be propped open. Damaged or ill-fitting door should be reported to the building management company and repaired or replaced promptly, they have an obligation to carry out these works.

*Some fire doors may be fitted with a self-closer and will close in the event of a fire alarm. These are usually found in commercial buildings and workspaces. They are not commonly found in apartment buildings.

Last week, Chief Fire Officer Dennis Keeley was honoured to join Dublin Civil Defence Officer James McConnell in a presentation to five Civil Defence volunteers to mark 60 years of service to Dublin Civil Defence.

The Civil Defence assist the frontline emergency services during time of natural disasters or major emergency situations. The Dublin Civil Defence has almost 400 volunteers and provides second line support to all local authorities in Dublin.

Thank you all for your extraordinary dedication to an invaluable organisation.

Congratulations to our unit Commander Mike Carroll upon receiving his 60 year service award tonight.

He joined Dublin Civil Defence at the age of 16 back 1960 and moved up through the ranks becoming an AFS instructor and as current position now of unit Commander of Blanchardstown AFS.

We thank him for all his dedication and time spent here at Dublin Civil Defence.
