Universal Design: Community Parks and Playgrounds

Universal Design: Community Parks and Playgrounds Passionate about enabling play occupation! Welcome to our website which we are launching today on Universal Children's Day, 20 November 2017.

Our team in OSOT at UCC are passionate about play: play occupation, playspaces and enabling play for all children. We have funding for the next six months to study Universal Design for parks and playgrounds: researching community spaces as sites for social inclusion for families and communities, for all children including those with disabilities. Welcoming new friends to the forest today, and talking about Risky Play!

CNAC Executive Director, Marlene Power met with Michael Lough, Vice President – Specialty Programs of Frank Cowan Insurance today to talk about CNAC’s work in leading the first Canadian Risk Benefit Assessment Toolkit for Outdoor Play.
Frank Cowan Company and the Cowan Foundation is supporting the second phase of a unique and vital project to publish the toolkit.
Over the last year CNAC has been working with consultants, researchers and an advisory committee to bridge this gap by developing the first Canadian Risk Benefit Assessment Toolkit for Outdoor Play. We are thrilled to partner with Frank Cowan Company for the second phase of this project and announce a donation by The Cowan Foundation of $76,000 over two years.
The Canadian Risk Benefit Assessment Toolkit for Outdoor Play will be released at the upcoming Breath of Fresh Air Outdoor Play Summit, September 27-29th, 2019 and will include an online digital format of the toolkit to ensure wide implementation across Canada in outdoor play, as well as professional learning opportunities.
All of our partners are working together so that this national quality standard will break down misconceptions of risk and liability and ensure that the insurance sector no longer remains a barrier to the outdoor play sector - fostering resiliency in children and youth will have a significant impact on improving their ability to problem-solve and cope with life’s challenges.
