We had a very special guest to cork this week…

No…. Not APF Murphy….

Iolar…

The Iolar (registration EI-ABI) is a restored de Havilland DH.84 Dragon biplane that served as the very first aircraft operated by Aer Lingus.

"Iolar" is the Irish word for "eagle".

Inaugural Flight: On May 27, 1936, it performed Aer Lingus's first-ever flight from Baldonnel Aerodrome near Dublin to Bristol,

The original aircraft was sold in 1938 and later lost off the coast of Cornwall during World War II in 1940.

The Current Aircraft: A rare surviving sister aircraft was restored for Aer Lingus's 50th anniversary in 1986 and brought back to flight status by engineers and volunteers to celebrate the airline's 90th anniversary.
