Hi everyone,
Cork Public Museum and the Cork Branch of the Western Front Association, supported by the City Library and Cork City and County Archives, are currently undertaking a study of the Battle of Le Pilly, as part of our continuing research into the Irish involvement in the Great War.
This year, 2024, marks the 110th anniversary of the battle which took place on 19th October 1914. The Royal Irish Regiment suffered significant losses during the battle. Most of the casualties remain officially missing to this day. There was a significant Irish involvement in the battle, with many of the unrecovered soldiers originally hailing from Counties Tipperary, Kilkenny, Cork, Waterford and Wexford.
We are appealing to the public to come forward with any information about the casualties of this battle. In particular, we would love to hear from the relatives and family members of the soldiers whose remains were never recovered. We are hoping to record family stories, artefacts and photographs of the men and their experiences during the Great War.
