We are updating the 2013 National Standards for Residential Services for Children and Adults with Disabilities.

The updated National Standards for Residential Services for Disabled People aim to drive continued improvement in residential services for disabled people and help to ensure residents receive safe, high-quality, person-centred care and support.
We want to know what is important to people who are living in or using a residential service.

Our Deputy Chief Inspector of Social Services, Susan Cliffe, spoke at a recent Caru Regional Network event about the importance of high-quality end-of-life care in nursing homes.

Susan highlighted the need for a coordinated, system-wide approach to support residents and their families at this important stage of care. The role of regulation is key in setting clear standards and supporting accountability, while compassionate leadership on the ground helps ensure dignity and respect are upheld.

National initiatives, including the National Nursing Home Experience Survey and National End of Life Survey, continue to provide valuable insights that help services understand what matters most to people and where improvements can be made.

Susan highlighted how improving end-of-life care is a shared responsibility, and collaboration remains key to ensuring the best outcomes for residents and their families.

We have published two reports which together provide evidence to inform an update to Ireland’s low-risk alcohol guidelines.

This work has been informed by new international evidence and advances in modelling methods used to estimate alcohol-related health risks since the guidelines were last updated in 2015.

Our reports highlight a number of findings for consideration by guideline developers as they update the low-risk alcohol guidelines.

We have just released our 2025 Health Technology Assessment (HTA) Impact Report, highlighting the reach and impact of our 2025 HTA initiatives.

A HTA evaluates the clinical and cost effectiveness of health interventions and services to advise on the best use of resources and maximise patient outcomes.

Key achievements include:
- 9.5k views and 4.7k downloads across 171 HTA outputs
- 139k+ LinkedIn impressions
- 33 workshops, presentations, and posters delivered at key events
- 24 impactful reports published

Members of our Health Information Quality and Assurance Team, were in Brussels last week, collaborating at European conferences to shape the future of health data practices under the European Health Data Space Regulation.

Our Deputy Director of Health Information, Dr Barbara Foley, represented Ireland at a workshop on Gaps and Future Needs for successful implementation of the European Health Data Space (EHDS) Regulation hosted by the Belgian Health Data Agency. The event brought together participants from across the EHDS Community of Practice and TEHDAS2 Joint Action. The EHDS Regulation aims to make health data more accessible, secure and usable, while protecting people’s privacy. Barbara shared findings from HIQA's recent feasibility study with data holders in Ireland, focusing on the implementation of the EU QUANTUM dimensions of data quality.

Maria Ryan, our Programme Manager, led a session at the QUANTUM final event, demonstrating how the new Data Quality and Utility Label works in real-world settings to offer benefits to patients.

We are working closely with Roinn Sláinte, Department of Health and European partners on these health data initiatives to strengthen Ireland’s health information system and ensure that Ireland is ready to fully benefit from a more connected, secure and patient-centred European data infrastructure.

Deputy CEO and Director of Health Technology Assessment, Dr Mairin Ryan, alongside Deputy Director of HTA, Kieran Walsh, represented Ireland at the Heads of HTA Agencies Group (HAG) meeting in Paphos, Cyprus last week.

The HAG is an independent network of European bodies who work together to increase European collaboration on health technology assessments (HTA). A HTA evaluates the clinical and cost effectiveness of health interventions and services to advise on the best use of resources and maximise patient outcomes.

At the HAG meetings, different European countries come together for high-level strategic exchange and discussion and to promote ways to collaborate and to enhance the impact of HTAs.

The next HAG meeting will take place in Dublin in October 2026 after Ireland takes over the Presidency of the Council of the EU on 1 July 2026. We look forward to continuing this collaboration!

The National Inpatient Experience Survey invites people who have spent more than 24 hours in a public hospital in May to share their experiences of care.

It aims to improve the safety and quality of care provided to people in hospital and covers every aspect of inpatient care from admission, to the ward, care and treatment, interaction with staff and discharge.

All eligible participants will be invited to take part via text message from 27 May.

The National Inpatient Experience Survey is part of the National Care Experience Programme, a joint initiative of HIQA, the HSE Ireland and the Roinn Sláinte, Department of Health.
