BA World Languages, UCC: CK110

BA World Languages, UCC: CK110 The BA (World Languages) is a four-year specialist language programme. It aims to produce graduates All placements must be approved by the Board of Studies.

Commencing in September 2014, the BA (World Languages) is a four-year specialist language programme, which includes study abroad and, in most of the languages offered, Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) to complement more traditional teaching. This programme delivered by UCC, where Modern Languages were ranked in the top 100 institutes worldwide (QS World University Rankings by Subject (20

13), offers the possibility to study a wide and attractive range of languages: some are offered as Major Subjects, while the number of credits offered in other, complementary languages is limited. While the focus of the programme is on living European and World languages, Latin is also offered for its value as an academic discipline and as the root of several of the other languages available. Most of the languages offered can be taken without having been studied previously, but students of French or Irish must have taken them to Honours level in the Leaving Certificate or equivalent and, in any case, all students must have demonstrated competence in a language other than English. The Third Year of the programme is a structured Year Abroad, involving study at a partner institution or a combination of study at a partner institution and a work placement: students are encouraged to take the initiative in organizing work placements themselves, this being a valuable learning experience in itself, but this will be facilitated by the Board of Studies in collaboration with UCC’s Careers Service.

The weather was mostly kind and there as a real buzz on campus for the 2024 UCC Open Day. Lots of interest in World Languages at the programme talks and at the BAWL stand in the Main Restaurant, where we had information on the career paths of some of our graduates.

A moment's hesitation... Yes, a full stop here—but shouldn't there be a comma there? Or would a hyphen be better? Punctuation can be a nuisance; it is often simply neglected. Wrong! The most recent statistical analyses paint a different picture: punctuation seems to "grow out" of the foundations s...

Delighted to see out very own BA World Languages, UCC: CK110 student, Ronan Keohane, win today's Global Citizen Award at the UCC EmployAgility Awards. This award was designed to recognise students who stand out in their awareness of their place in the wider world. A global citizen recognises the part they have to play in the ever-growing world community and seeks to add to this community through their actions. This includes sharing values and practices which contribute to equality, fairness, and sustainability. Congratulations once again Ronan!

A Cree language class at the University of Manitoba was nearly cancelled this past semester after only one person registered for the course. But its instructor says he wanted it to go on, even if he wouldn’t be paid his full amount, because passing on language is more important than making money.
