Who knew the history of the panto in Dublin went back so far?

season continues through January so Patrick Ryan from the Dublin 8 Newswire team looks at the history of shows which have delighted for 150 years, and trace their roots back to stock characters from Italian, and later French travelling comedy troupes 150 years (and more) before that.

Property Price Ceilings for the First Home Scheme now been increased in 17 local authority areas following the scheduled review at the end of 2025.

These increases will make more new homes available to first-time buyers in these local authority areas and may also encourage the supply of new homes in areas which currently have low stock.

Welcoming the development, James Browne TD said:
“Our new Housing Action Plan, Building Homes, Delivering Communities, recognises home ownership as a core objective. By raising the ceilings under the First Home Scheme, we are giving more first‑time buyers and other eligible applicants the support they need to secure a home of their own.
“This is about broadening opportunity and making the ambition of home ownership achievable for many more people.”

So far, under the scheme:
✔8,399 buyers approved.
✔4,118 buyers already completed the purchase of their home.
✔ Over €273m in support provided to people who have bought or self-built their homes.
✔Over 19,200 potential buyers or self-builders have registered their interest in the scheme.

Dublin City New Town Plan, 1922

This plan for the future growth of Dublin during the 20th Century was prepared by the renowned English planner Patrick Abercrombie and associates.

Note the geometric road layouts of planned new suburbs that later were developed in a different pattern as Marino, Crumlin, Clontarf, Cabra and a huge new area of reclaimed land from Dublin Bay running from Sandymount out to Blackrock.

The principal rail lines serving Dublin are also highlighted, with a planned new central rail station located near the Four Courts along new rail lines that connect the existing rail network in the city.

Over a century later, Dublin still lacks a metro system or DART interconnector to properly join up the rail system in the city.
