Bloomsday: https://dalkeycastle.com/home/events/bloomsday

Rejoyce with Joyce and explore the colourful south Dublin coast as events are held around the world, but particularly here in Joyce's Dublin, to mark the literary day that is Bloomsday!

Begin your celebrations here at our Joycean evening on Monday 15th June or join us on the day itself for a live performance of the schoolroom scene from the Nestor episode of Ulysses followed by a guided Joycean walk through Joyce's Dalkey. Feel the magic of literature come alive where “the sun flung spangles, dancing coins.”

You can pick up an e-bike outside here at the Castle or park up for awhile & flâneur.

O'er the ramparts we watched...our flag was still there https://dalkeycastle.com

Rupert, the archer at Dalkey Castle, keeps a watchful eye to the Wicklow hills, lest the O'Briens or O'Tooles continue their maraudering ways and attempt to raid the Castle.

Listen to Rupert explain your arrow options, perhaps even test it out for yourself, here at our living history experience, where history is truly brought to life https://dalkeycastle.com/home/the-visit/

To dear, good Gordon, with love and thanks.

It is with the deepest sadness that we mourn the passing of Gordon Snell, author, broadcaster & Maeve Binchy's beloved husband of over 35 years.

The Manager and Staff of Dalkey Castle & Heritage Centre would like to extend their sympathies to the Snell, Binchy & Dromgoole families, & Gordon's many friends.

Gordon was an only child, born in Singapore, where he grew up. His father was a Surveyor. When it was time for him to go to boarding school, his mother travelled with him to Geelong, Australia. While they were in Australia, Singapore was invaded and his father was a prisoner of war for over three years.

Gordon was a broadcaster and the author of more than forty books for children and adults, published in Ireland, England, Australia, Canada and the USA. Among children’s favourites are: "The Tex and Sheelagh Omnibus", "The King of Quizzical Island", "Amy's Wonderful Nest", "Tina and the Tooth Fairy" and "The Supermarket Ghost". Gordon wrote poetry, song lyrics, musicals and librettos for the stage, and for BBC and RTE radio and television.

He was working as a freelance broadcaster and producer for the BBC when he met Maeve in London in 1970. They married in 1977. They spent their very happily married lives together writing heartfelt dedications to each other in their books & entertaining each other with stories.

Our consolation is that they are reunited together now in love & laughter.

Ditch Dublin City for the Coast: https://dalkeycastle.com

We are blessed to be in a stunning part of the world all year round but the sunshine really does help illuminate it.

Groups can take our living history tour & walk as a combination (literary & historical) or as separate items. It really is a pleasure to share this magical little spot with a wide range of guests. So far this year our guided walks have been particularly popular with Austrians.

If you have a group looking for some Irish history alongside some fresh sea air and epic scenery, why not consider a guided walk in Dalkey (minimum group size: 10 people) https://dalkeycastle.com/home/the-visit/guided-walks

An additional venue for Dalkey Book Festival: https://www.dalkeybookfestival.org/thursday

The eagle-eyed amongst you may have spied a new venue on the Dalkey Book Festival list. With a more limited use of Cuala due to building works, Loreto Abbey Dalkey has stepped into the breach.

Alma mater of many locals, attended by Joanne McNally amongst others (https://www.irishexaminer.com/lifestyle/arid-30947606.html), Loreto has always had a prime position on the coastline with a stunning vista of Dalkey Island. Lovely for attendees of the book festival to get a chance to experience it.

Pre-sale for Dalkey Book Festival starts today, with general sale on Friday.

Programme details are at: https://www.dalkeybookfestival.org/thursday
