🚨 Busy 24 Hours for Drogheda Coast Guard 🚨

It has been a busy 24 hours for Drogheda Coast Guard, with two separate callouts in the Drogheda area.

📍 Thursday Night Callout (23:17)
Shortly after 23:17 on Thursday evening, Drogheda Coast Guard pagers were activated by MRCC following a request from An Garda Síochána. Reports indicated that a male had last been seen in the water near the north bank in the vicinity of the Bridge of Peace, close to Drogheda Garda Station.

Our D-Class rescue boat was immediately launched, and a land search team was dispatched to the area. As additional crew arrived at the station, a second D-Class boat was launched to assist with the search. Clogherhead Coast guard Unit was tasked to attend with their terminal imaging drone.

Within an hour of commencing operations, An Garda Síochána informed Coast Guard personnel on scene that a male matching the description had been located and detained at a separate location. Following confirmation that this individual was the person of concern, MRCC stood the operation down.

A fantastic evening was had at the retirement celebration for Superintendent Andrew Waters, held at the Cunningham Arms Hotel, Slane, on 3rd May.

Coast Guard Officer in Charge Dermot McConnoran attended with his wife Eileen, alongside Deputy Officer in Charge Paul O’Neill and his partner Kelly, to mark Andy’s remarkable 40 years of dedicated service with An Garda Síochána.

The night was filled with great stories and fond memories from across Andy’s distinguished career. To make the occasion even more special, Andy proposed to his lovely partner Jean during the celebrations.

Everyone at Drogheda Coast Guard would like to wish Andy and his fiancée our warmest congratulations, a very happy retirement, and a wonderful life together.

🚨 MAJOR DEVELOPMENT AT DROGHEDA COAST GUARD STATION (AND POSSIBLY THE FASTEST THING IN LOUTH MEATH WATERS) 🚨

With massive thanks to Louth County Council and the Drogheda City Manager, we can confirm that after years of intense negotiations, strategic planning, and at least one strongly worded email…

👉 The legendary “Emergency Area No Parking” markings have officially been painted at Horse Lane.
Yes, that’s right. The cones have been outmatched. The yellow lines have spoken. The battle is over. "NO PARKING"

But wait… it gets better.

Yesterday evening also saw the arrival of our brand new IRCG Rescue Ski, now patrolling the mighty River Boyne at a completely unnecessary but extremely enjoyable 65 knots (120 km/h)

Early reports confirm:

• Seagulls are now giving us right of way
• Fishermen have never looked more impressed/confused
• Redbull stays mostly in the can (results may vary)

In this surprising delivery, a mysterious local company (who definitely exists) stepped forward to fund and deliver the ski ensuring weekly volunteer training will be out the door.

This means a steady stream of volunteers ready to:

• Save lives
• Learn vital rescue skills
• And most importantly… see who can go fastest without getting shouted at.

All jokes aside (briefly, don’t panic), this will genuinely help the Drogheda Coast Guard Unit cut response times where seconds matter. Months before our new 9 meter Rib is delivered as part of the Coast Guard national upgrade programme.

But today… we’re mainly celebrating the lines. The beautiful, unstoppable lines.

Incident Obelisk Bridge, Oldbridge 20/3/2026

Shortly before midnight on Friday night Marine Rescue Coordination centre (MRCC) requested Drogheda Coast guard (DCGU) unit to assist An Garda Siochana with a dispondant search at the Obelisk
bridge area of the River Boyne.

Our D-class boat was launched with three crew and proceed westerly up river as the river was in full flood and navigation was possible to the area, as the boat was under way two land teams were dispatched in CG vehicles to the scene to commence a ground search with one vehicle taking the north side and the second vehicle taking the south side of the river. The vehicle on south side came across family members and were informed that the casualty was currently on the Obelisk bridge and avoiding any personal contact. The vehicle and crew proceeded and made contact with the casualty. CG members walked slowly with the casualty to an area where they sat and ensured he was ok and were later joined by National ambulance service AP and second vehicle and crew and shortly after An Garda Siochana arrived on scene followed by a NAS ambulance and crew.

With the casualty safely handed over to the care of NAS the boat was stood down and returned to station followed by the land teams.

🚤 Irish Coast Guard – On the Water (River Boyne) and in the parade.

These images capture the Coast Guard unit operating on the River Boyne, adding a distinctive maritime element to the parade. Boats and rescue craft typically accompany the celebrations, showcasing local emergency response and their equipment. With other unit members taking part in the main parade through the town—in uniform, showcasing vehicles, rescue boats and other gear is always a big hit with the crowd.
