๐ฆ๐ฆ Wildlife road deaths and injuries are a growing issue across Ireland, yet many people still donโt know what to do when they encounter injured wildlife on the road.
According to Wildlife Rehabilitation Ireland (WRI), countries such as include wildlife awareness in driver education and have systems in place for reporting injured or dead wildlife. Drivers are taught how to respond safely and responsibly when wildlife collisions happen. ๐๐ฅ๐พ
In , most drivers are never formally taught what steps to take. As a result, injured animals can be left suffering, while important information about wildlife collision hotspots is lost.
The Party for Animal Welfare (PAW) is calling on the Irish Government to follow Swedenโs example by improving wildlife awareness, driver education, and wildlife reporting systems in Ireland. ๐ฎ๐ช๐พ
If you come across injured wildlife:
โ ๏ธ Do not approach if it is unsafe
๐ Move to a safe location
๐ Contact a wildlife rescue, rehabilitation service, or local vet
๐ซ Avoid handling wild animals unless advised by trained professionals
Even if an animal has sadly died, reporting sightings can still help. Wildlife road death data helps experts identify danger areas, migration routes, and accident hotspots where animals are most at risk. ๐ฆ๐ฆก
In Ireland, dead wildlife sightings can be reported to the National Biodiversity Data Centre, helping conservation groups better understand the impact roads are having on native wildlife populations. ๐๐
Greater awareness, better driver education, and stronger support for wildlife rescue organisations could make a real difference โ for both animals and the people who share these roads. ๐
Every report matters. Every life matters. ๐พ
