We have recently gained a few new followers and supporters on the page 👋

First off, hello, and you are very welcome.

We are the local Civil Defence unit in Dun Laoghaire, based at the Fire Station on Kill Avenue, made up of ordinary people from across South County Dublin, with members from Templeogue, Clonskeagh, Dun Laoghaire, Shankill and everywhere in between, who give their time to support events, assist during emergencies, provide medical cover, search support, welfare assistance, flood response and much more.

Training, teamwork and community spirit are at the heart of what we do, and we’re proud to serve both our local community, the greater Dublin area and, when called upon, nationally.

We use this page to share some of our training, duties, events and the occasional behind-the-scenes look at unit life.

If you have any questions about what we do, volunteering, training or Civil Defence in general, please feel free to send us a message — we’re always happy to help.

Thanks again for the support, and welcome aboard 🚑🚒💙

At 03:00 this morning, members of our unit rolled into the yard to collect vehicles and prepare for our local Darkness Into Light walk

For the last number of years, our unit — alongside other Dublin Civil Defence units and units from around the country — has been proud to provide medical cover and support for this incredibly worthwhile event.

Because of the nature of Darkness Into Light, it always feels a little more personal. It’s not just another duty; it’s neighbours helping neighbours, friends supporting friends, and communities coming together in the early hours for a shared cause.

A huge well done to all involved this morning, from the organisers and volunteers to every single person who took part in the walk.

Sometimes the smallest acts — a kind word, a helping hand, simply showing up — can make the biggest difference. 💛

Well done to all the volunteers from Dublin, Louth and Meath.

A solid night’s training this week for our volunteers, getting hands-on in full turnout gear under the watchful eye of Hendrik, our qualified pump operator.
The focus was water movement — building confidence and real competence around hoses and pumps in a variety of scenarios. From flood relief operations to tank filling, and even our newly acquired skill of filling steam engines, these are skills that demand both teamwork and precision.
There’s no substitute for practical training, and sessions like this make sure our crew are ready to step in when they’re needed most.
Fair play to everyone who got stuck in.

Last night, in a change from our usual outdoor training, the class took part in a radio communications refresher session.
Led by our First Officer, Lar—who not only oversees the class but also serves as a Radio Communications Instructor with Dublin Civil Defence , the session was a great opportunity to sharpen vital skills that keep our teams connected and effective on the ground.
Strong communication is at the heart of everything we do, and it’s always valuable to revisit the fundamentals while learning from experienced hands.
A really engaging and informative night all round.

Every day is a training day.

Last night, we took part in cross-unit training alongside our colleagues from the Dublin Civil Defence Nutgrove AFS Unit at the training range in Rathfarnham House.

Building strong relationships with other units is essential—not only does it enhance interoperability during operations, but it also strengthens morale, teamwork, and shared knowledge across the board.

Training together like this ensures that when we’re called upon, we can respond effectively, professionally, and as a cohesive team.
