Since Ireland🇮🇪 took on the Presidency of the Council of the EU🇪🇺 on July 1st, a number of meetings have taken place across the country.
Ministers and delegations from Malta🇲🇹 have been in attendance at meetings in various locations including Dublin, Cork and Ballina, debating and discussing a variety of issues alongside counterparts from fellow EU member states.
After a summer break, meetings will resume on Monday, as Defence Ministers gather in Wicklow, and will continue until the end of the year.

Last Monday 27 July 2026, the Ambassador had the opportunity to visit the Laois County Council for a flag-raising ceremony marking the twinning of the Co Laois🇮🇪 with Malta🇲🇹 for the duration of the Irish EU Council Presidency. This event was attended by distinguished guests including TD Sean Fleming, the Cathaoirleach Catherine Fitzgerald, members of the Council and other guests and friends of Malta. The Ambassador was also pleased to meet some members of the Maltese community resident in Laois and to have a brief exchange of views with them.

The Ambassador and staff from the Embassy of Malta attended the launch of the exhibition 'Vision' which showcases contemporary photography from the 27 member states of the European Union. Malta's entry by Heritage Malta photographer Pierre Balzia, titled "A nation forged by visionary martyrs" depicts a detail from the monument of the Sette Giugno 1919, symbolising resilient Maltese facing death with pride while embracing the Maltese flag.

The exhibition, being held at Farmleigh Gallery, is organised by the OPW - Office of Public Works and was launched by Minister of State with responsibility for the OPW Kevin 'Boxer' Moran. The exhibition is open until 31 December 2026. Entry is free of charge.

On 17 June 2026, the Ambassador attended a lunch hosted by the Cypriot Presidency with Foreign Minister Helen McEntee as guest speaker, during which the Irish EU Presidency programme and priorities were discussed.

On Friday 12 June 2026, Ambassador Formosa attended Eurofound 's Open Day 2026 which showcased the work carried out by Eurofound in helping to shape better living and working conditions across the European Union. This year's open day celebrated the theme 'Ireland in the European Union.'

The Ambassador participated in an event organised by European Movement Ireland marking the beginning of the Irish EU Presidency 🇮🇪🇪🇺. During the event, Minister Helen McEntee TD, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Minister for Defence delivered a keynote speech and held a fireside chat where the Presidency Priorities and other topical matters were discussed.

Ambassador Formosa met Professor Dáire Keogh, President of Dublin City University DCU , and Mr Leo McNamee, Global Partnerships, Strategy and Relations Manager, to discuss ongoing and future collaborations between DCU and the University of Malta, student mobility and broader Malta-Ireland relations.
