Today, Inspector of Mental Health Services, Professor Jim Lucey, took some time out with friends to paint the Future in Mind garden at Bord Bia Bloom before the crowds arrive.

This year marks 20 years since the commencement of the Bloom festival in Ireland, and 20 years since the establishment of the Mental Health Commission.

Visit the Future in Mind garden at Bloom and learn about how the garden, designed by Joe Eustace, depicts the past, present and future of mental health care services in Ireland.

Bord Bia Bloom is on from Thursday 28 May to Monday 1 June 2026.

Were you recently discharged from a mental health unit or hospital? Tell us about your experience.

If you are discharged from a mental health hospital or unit between April and July 2026, you may be eligible to take part in the National Mental Health Experience Survey. Eligible participants will receive an invitation letter in the post a few months after discharge.

Your feedback on your experience of inpatient mental healthcare will be used to help shape and improve mental health services in Ireland.

The National Mental Health Experience Survey is a joint initiative of the Department of Health, Mental Health Commission and the Health Service Executive, facilitated by the National Care Experience Programme.

"It's really important to acknowledge the many barriers that people with an intellectual disability face in accessing high quality care and support when and how they need it."

Derval McDonagh, CEO of Inclusion Ireland welcomes the Mental Health Commission's new guidance on mental health and intellectual disability.

The guidelines have been published in an easy-to-read format so that people with intellectual disabilities, and others who need it, can clearly understand the standard of care and treatment they are entitled to expect.

Visit the 'Future in Mind' garden at Bord Bia Bloom 2026.

Sponsored by the Mental Health Commission and designed by Joe Eustace, the 'Future in Mind' garden will depict Ireland's mental health care journey from an institutional model towards a community-based, trauma-informed, recovery-oriented system.

It will highlight the Mental Health Commission’s role over the past 20 years regulating inpatient mental health services.

It will also bring us into the future, recognising the expanding responsibilities the Mental Health Commission will have under the new Mental Health Act 2026, which was signed into law earlier this month.

Under the new Act, the regulatory function of the Mental Health Commission will expand to include community mental health residences and services, including all community Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services.

In our stories, watch Joe Eustace speak about how the design of the garden reflects a broad societal shift around mental health care in Ireland.

"This campaign speaks directly to something deeply personal and profoundly human: the act of planning ahead.

Not just as a legal formality but as an act of care, as an act of trust, and an act of respect for ourselves and those closest to us."
