It’s important we all are aware and understand the role of the SAAO. And support their great work. Protecting our beautiful green spaces and coastline for now and the future of our place we call home.

In 1999, Fingal County Council recognised the exceptional character of the area of Howth by making the Howth Special Amenity Area Order. The Order protects many of the special qualities of the area and aims to preserve and enhance the character and special features of Howth.

Rest in Peace Leo McGlue.

We were so privileged and delighted to have Leo McGlue visit the EIRE 6 site with his family during the restoration.

Leo was a delightful and worthy eye witness to the construction of the EIRE 6 sign in the summer of 1943.

Leo became the local postman, a post he held for over 40 years. A great dad and a loving husband to Doreen. When he heard what we were up to on the East Mountain, he walked to the sign, during the pandemic, in his early 90’s to give Philip his story and memories of the sign being built that summer.

He was a young teen during the summer of 1943 and remembers standing at the summit carpark watching the local defense force starting to build the sign. He was our only living witness to the original story and so helpful to our restoration. He was a friend of Corporal Rourke’s sons. He was a kind, funny, loving man.

Rest in Peace Leo, it was a joy to have known you. I wish I had all your stories, you were a master storyteller.

Condolences to Doreen, family and all who loved him.

A fun night with Howth Sutton Autism Friendly Community
Thank you for inviting me to give the story of the sign and restoration.

It was so fun meeting you all and learning of your creative pursuits. Keep writing, drawing, storytelling, gaming, laughing and for those that love history or nature, do visit the sign.
Thanks Gill for hosting

The Pub Club was delighted with our visitor Lara O'Brien - Writing Workshops & Retreats who told us the fascinating story behind the Eire 6 sign that was uncovered along the upper cliff path. We're looking forward to taking a hike up that direction together soon to check it out for oursleves.
Our Pub Club loves the occasional organised visitor who has interesting nuggets to share with us. Why not get in touch with us so we can schedule a drop-in some Monday evening?

A 2019 biodiversity study conducted by the Fingal County Council revealed an incredible 95 spider species recorded in Howth, including several rare and unique ones like Zelotes Latreillei!

These small but vital creatures help keep ecosystems balanced and healthy. When in Howth, remember to tread carefully and stay only on marked trails.

All the very best for a long and relaxing retirement to President Higgins and Sabina Higgins.

We were honoured to host the President and Sabina to launch the opening or completion of the restoration of the sign in April 9th 2022.

It was a beautiful day for our community and the families of the local defense force who built the sign in the summer of 1943.

What a great day it was to welcome President Higgins and Sabina to the east mountain, Howth.

From all of us in the restoration group, congratulations on a job well done, thank you for all your support in heritage and the arts, and for being such a wonderful inspiration for so many in Ireland.

Go n-éirí leat all the very best and thank you.

Howth’s beauty is a gift to pass on. By caring for its cliffs, paths and wildlife, the Howth SAAO help ensure this special place stays alive for years to come. And you can help too!

Remember to:
- Stay on marked trails
- Take your litter home
- Respect local wildlife
