Creating a Collage of Courage 💜

Volunteers from our community recently came together to participate in two art workshops at IADT.

Volunteers from all backgrounds were invited to create together, reflect on stories of courage and belonging, and contribute to a collective artwork that will be exhibited during Refugee Week this June, in the DLR Lexicon Library.

The workshop was facilitated by Misha Zehra Abbas, a Pakistani-Saudi Arabian artist and recent IADT MA graduate. Misha guided participants through the creation of colourful motifs — each one expressing the unique voice and story of its creator, while becoming part of a larger shared artwork.

A huge thank you to Misha for bringing her enthusiasm and creativity, and for creating a welcoming and inspiring environment for the volunteers.

To the wonderful volunteers: we were so delighted that you joined in and gave your time and energy to this activity. Thank you for being open to connecting with your community through creativity!

A special thank you also to Sarah McDonagh, IADT Community Engagement Officer, for her fantastic support in providing space for the workshop and helping us get this off the ground through her commitment and enthusiasm!

These wonderful photos were taken by Seffy Photography 📸.

Supporting Africa Day Celebrations 🌍

We were delighted to join in with the celebration of Africa Day 2026 in Dun Laoghaire's People's Park at the weekend! Thank you to the DLR Local Authority Integration Team for inviting us to be part of this special event.

Our amazing Community Volunteers Programme were on the ground, welcoming people to the event, distributing leaflets and encouraging attendees to join in with the celebrations. A huge thank you to all volunteers who supported the event; your presence made all the difference!

This event was part of DLRCOCO's Celebrating Cultures series and was a wonderful celebration of Africa, showcasing cultures within our community through a great line-up of drop-in events and workshops. It was such a lovely way to bring people together, and highlight cultural diversity, in a welcoming space.

Exploring citizen science! 🔬

It's National Biodiversity Week, and staff and volunteers were delighted to join in with UCD Earth Institute's Freshwater Invertebrates Workshop this week to develop our identification skills.

This session was a lovely combination of theory and hands on practical activities. We learned that these invertebrates are good bioindicators of water quality, and that they vary in their sensitivity to pollution. We loved having a closer look under the microscope!

A huge thank you to Marcin Penk and Georgina for their guidance and knowledge sharing during the session, and to the volunteers who joined in. We hope that we can apply our learning to local biodiversity actions in the future!

Volunteers creating and connecting 💙

In Dún Laoghaire Rathdown, volunteers have been coming together to make items to donate to local charities and community groups.

These Creative Connections sessions have been so rewarding. Each volunteer has brought their own unique flair and creativity to the items being made and we wanted to share some of these with you today.

Volunteers have made St. Brigid's crosses which were donated to Shankill Seniors Centre and friendship bracelets and peg dolls which will be shared with Team Hope for their Christmas shoebox appeal. We have also been knitting, and we are excited to share an update on those makes later in the week!

We have loved the connections made and the conversations had, but what has warmed our hearts most is the kindness between volunteers, and how they helped each other along the way. A huge thank you to all for joining in!

It's National Volunteering Week! 🎉

In Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Volunteer Centre, we are so happy to take this opportunity to thank and celebrate volunteers in our local community. We are humbled and inspired every day by the people we have the privilege to support on their volunteering journey.

The theme of this year's National Volunteering Week is "From Every Corner for Every Cause", which celebrates the extraordinary collective power of volunteering, local and global, and honours the people whose time, compassion and commitment make a measurable difference every single day.

Today, we are shining a light on a wonderful day in Cabinteely Park, where a group of amazing volunteers supported Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council Parks Department to plant a native hedgerow to support biodiversity, improve shelter and enhance the park for the whole community. 🌳

Monitoring our precious waterways! 💧

On a sunny Friday afternoon in April, 12 dedicated environmental volunteers came together to take part in The Big River Watch along the Dodder river in Bushy Park. 💚

Under the guidance of Justin Ivory from LAWPRO, volunteers monitored the river for wildlife and pollution. This data makes a valuable contribution to monitoring efforts. The recording session was then followed by a wonderful biodiversity walk and talk which the volunteers thoroughly enjoyed!

We want to say a huge thank you to the volunteers and Justin for their time and efforts. We look forward to contributing in the future to more citizen science initiatives! Local Authority Waters Programme The Rivers Trust
