Spuds community based research Sustainable Potatoes United Development Study How do you like your potatoes: round, pink, unblemished? Is it their appearance, taste, texture?

What are the characteristics that make one potato more attractive than another? If you knew that the pretty potato you regularly buy needs to be sprayed with fungicide up to 20 times a season, threatening the health of our natural environment and the farmer who cultivates it, would you choose to buy a potato with character that required no spraying? Naturally blight resistant potatoes exist in the

marketplace today. Could the cultivation of these varieties reduce our carbon footprint and diminish dependency on chemicals in the Irish food system. To dig deeper into this question the Lifeline Project, in partnership with The Savari Research Trust and supported by GIY Ireland, are asking the people of Ireland to grow a variety of naturally blight resistant potatoes this summer as part of a community based research project.

“There are already so many varieties of blight resistant potato out there, it seems pointless to spend so much time and money developing GM versions of the same thing. Trials like this are generally cheaper, easier to run and less exclusive. I’d encourage any grower looking for an alternative to chemical sprays to get involved in the Innovative Farmers network.”
