Show solidarity with the Nkencho family as they sit through an Inquest into the killing of their son and brother George, shot 6 times by an armed response unit Garda on his doorstep in December 2020. The Irish state has been covering up the truth of the events that day and refuses to make this Garda accountable.
A huge investigation was done by GSOC, but the Director of Public Prosecutions opted not to make any prosecutions! We’ve seen this before with the DPP not prosecuting r**e cases, for example. This inordinate power to prevent trials must be challenged. Now, it is feared the Coroner may restrict the options for verdicts for the jury at the Inquest. Nothing short of ‘Unlawful Killing’ will do justice here.
Gardai can’t be allowed to operate with impunity. They must be accountable to the community they are meant to serve. And when they kill people there should automatically be a trial, as with any other killing. Shooting someone with a mental health crisis, not negotiating or defusing, is wrong. George could easily have been disarmed of the kitchen knife he had by the multiple Gardaí present, who all had training, non lethal weaponry and stab vests.
We need minority representatives, anti racists and all who care about human rights and justice to gather in support.
