The 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) begins next Tuesday, 8 September. This year’s General Debate theme is “Better together: 80 years and beyond for peace, development and human rights.”

As a responsible and committed member of the international community, Taiwan has long worked with countries around the world to address global challenges, including climate change, public health and sustainable development. We also continue to contribute our experience and expertise to the international community.

We look forward to, and call on, the United Nations to uphold the spirit of “leaving no one behind” by enabling Taiwan to participate appropriately and meaningfully in the UN system, so that the voices of Taiwan’s 23 million people can be heard by the world.

■ Taiwan actively promotes UN participation, calls for a UN that delivers for all

The 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly will open on September 8 at the UN headquarters in New York. The theme of this year’s General Debate will be “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations that Delivers for All.”

MOFA Vice Minister Baushuan Ger held a special press conference on September 1 to communicate to the public the Taiwan government’s 2026 campaign and strategy for promoting Taiwan’s UN participation, highlighting:

1⃣ UNGA Resolution 2758 neither dealt with Taiwan’s sovereignty nor precluded Taiwan’s meaningful participation in the UN system. The UN should identify appropriate ways of including Taiwan’s participation in the UN system so that Taiwan can contribute its expertise and experience to help accelerate the realization of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

2⃣ Firmly maintaining the status quo and ensuring peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait is the mainstream public opinion in Taiwan and the widely held and staunch position of the international community. It has also received extensive support among Taiwan’s democratic partners. Peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait are indispensable to global security and prosperity.

3⃣ Taiwan is committed to the peaceful settlement of disputes and staunchly defending the international legal order. Any attempts or actions to disrupt the status quo across the Taiwan Strait contravene the principles enshrined in the UN Charter prohibiting the threat or use of force and requiring the peaceful settlement of disputes.

Minister Lin Chia-lung published an op-ed entitled “Restoring trust: Taiwan’s rightful place in the free world” to communicate the Taiwan government’s stance to the world. The op-ed underlines that only by following the principles set out in the UN Charter and treating every member of the international community in a fair and just manner can the UN win back the international community’s confidence.

As an important stakeholder in the international community, Taiwan stands ready to face global challenges alongside global partners, and is an indispensable and vital force in the UN’s efforts to manage transformation. The government of Taiwan once again calls on the UN system to recognize the legitimate right of the 23.5 million people of Taiwan to participate in international affairs and to promptly seek appropriate ways to include Taiwan. Only in this way can the UN truly realize its commitment to leave no one behind and being a UN that delivers for all.

This summer, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has captured the attention of moviegoers around the world. Meanwhile, Taiwan’s 2025 documentary 𝑨 𝑪𝒉𝒊𝒑 𝑶𝒅𝒚𝒔𝒔𝒆𝒚 continues its journey across international screens. 🎞

The word “Odyssey” originates from the ancient Greek epic Odýsseia, and today is often used to describe a long and challenging journey. Over five years, director Hsiao Chu-Chen interviewed more than 80 key figures from Taiwan’s industry, looking back to the turbulent 1970s and exploring how — an island accounting for less than 0.01% of the world’s land area — went on to become a global semiconductor powerhouse over the following half-century.

If you’re reading this post on a smartphone or laptop, chances are the device in your hands contains advanced semiconductor chips . 😉

On 18 September, as part of , join us at Savoy Cinema in central Dublin and discover Taiwan’s remarkable half-century semiconductor journey on the big screen!

The from Kaohsiung took the stage at Dublin Unitarian Church on the afternoon of 15 August, welcoming more than 100 audience members across Ireland and filling the historic church with beautiful music.

Evan Furlong, Principal of the Dublin School of Mandarin Chinese and co-organiser of the event, first introduced the chorus, led by renowned vocalist and maestro Wu Hung-Chang. Comprising members from across Taiwan, the chorus has performed in more than 30 countries around the world. For its performance in Ireland ☘️, the chorus prepared a selection of classic songs in Mandarin, Taiwanese Hokkien and Hakka, showcasing the linguistic and musical diversity of Taiwan.

In his remarks, Ambassador Daniel Diann-Wen Tang warmly welcomed the Taiwan Chorus to Ireland and thanked the Dublin School of Mandarin Chinese for its support in making the performance possible. He noted that music 🎼 is an essential part of both Taiwanese and Irish culture: through music, we preserve cultural heritage and living wisdom, while bringing people from diverse backgrounds together.

Ambassador Tang also highlighted the continued deepening of Taiwan 🇹🇼 -Ireland 🇮🇪 relations. Beyond the significant growth in bilateral trades, cultural exchanges between Taiwan and Ireland have continued to flourish. As part of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ initiative, the performance offered a wonderful opportunity for Irish audiences to experience the warmth and vibrancy of Taiwan.

The concert opened with a suite performed by Taiwanese pianist 🎹 based in Ireland, Yuyin Lo. Under Maestro Wu’s direction, the chorus then filled the historic church with powerful harmonies, bringing the many faces of Taiwan to life through music.

From Song of Alishan and A Grateful Heart to beloved Taiwanese Hokkien and Hakka songs such as Rainy Day and A Taiwanese Drinking Song, melodies resonated throughout the historic church and reached the hearts of audiences from Taiwan and Ireland alike.

Our sincere thanks to all the performers, audience members and behind-the-scenes teams who made this special afternoon possible. We hope everyone enjoyed a memorable afternoon of music and cultural exchange in Dublin. 🫶
