From all of us at the Embassy to all of you: Happy May Day! 🎉

1 May is May Day, also known as Vappu, Valborg, or Labour Day. May Day is originally celebrated in honour of workers, but in Finland, it is also much more than that. It is a two-day festival (starting 30 April) marking the arrival of spring. In cities, you may spot countless of Finns having a picnic or strolling around in their high school graduation caps and colourful clothing. It is a celebration with parades, balloons, street markets, and of course some May Day snacks, such as doughnuts, tippaleipä and Finnish mead. 🍾🎈

Hei ulkomailla asuva nuori, vielä ehdit hakea kesälukioon! 🏫☀️

It was a pleasure hosting the Finnish Business Network and the Swedish Chamber of Commerce in Ireland for a business lunch and a networking event at the Finnish Residence this afternoon.

The discussion covered key issues for smaller European economies, including economic resilience, competitiveness, support for companies, cooperation within the EU, and investment in innovation, skills, and sustainable growth.

Irlannissa käynnissä olevien mielenosoitusten vuoksi liikenteessä voi esiintyä merkittäviä viivästyksiä, erityisesti keskusta-alueilla ja pääväylien läheisyydessä.

Suosittelemme matkustajia varaamaan ylimääräistä aikaa liikkumiseen, välttämään suuria ihmisjoukkoja sekä seuraamaan paikallisviranomaisten ohjeita ja tiedotusta.

Due to ongoing protests and traffic disruptions in Ireland, delays may occur, particularly in city centres and near major transport routes.

Travellers are advised to allow extra time for travel, avoid large crowds and follow guidance and updates from local authorities.

April 9 marks Finnish Language Day and commemorates Mikael Agricola, who was crucial in shaping Finnish as a written language in the 1500s. Agricola studied under Martin Luther and others in Wittenberg, Germany, where he translated the Old Testament into Finnish.

Finnish has come a long way since Agricola’s time. He laid the groundwork, but the language has kept growing, changing, and picking up new words along the way.

Everyone knows SISU, but what about these beauties? 😄 The Finnish language is full of strange, hard to translate words that all tell a story about the culture.

Kevät (Spring) is coming 🌱 The best thing about having four seasons is the variety they bring to both nature and activities! In just two months, parks will fill up with people, open lakes and rivers will welcome swimmers and kayakers, and the bike lanes still laden with gravel and ice will be clean and clear 🚴🏼‍♀️

What are you most looking forward to in the Spring? 🌤️

One of this week’s highlights was The Edge 2026 in Limerick! 🇫🇮🇪🇪🇮🇪

Ambassador Leena Gardemeister and Deputy Head of Mission Saara Heinola attended the annual diplomatic networking event that brought together industry leaders in the digital and energy sector from Ireland, Estonia, and Finland. The event included panel discussions and open-floor talks focusing on smart cities and smart travel, maritime digitalisation, cyber security, and energy.

Finland’s long-standing commitment to digital excellence, clean energy innovation, and resilient infrastructure makes collaboration with Ireland and Estonia natural. By connecting our strengths, we can collectively build resilient and forward-looking ecosystems.

Thank you to the Mayor of Limerick John Moran, Estonia’s Honorary Consul Julie Long, Finland’s Honorary Consul John Dundon, and our colleagues from the Embassy of Estonia as well as all other partners and panelists for making this event possible.
