The National Yacht Club was honoured to once again welcome students from Saint Augustine’s Special School to the Club last week.

Saint Augustine’s School is part of Saint John of God Community Services for people with an intellectual disability.
The school provides a Vocational Development Programme to prepare students for their transition from St Augustine’s, whether to further training or to the world of work.
Through participation in a range of realistic work-related activities, students are given opportunities to develop practical, employability and life skills, each according to their individual abilities and pace of learning.

An important part of the programme is visiting and experiencing different workplaces and gaining exposure to the various environments in which people work and participate.
Following a memorable visit in 2025, when NYC facilitated a harbour tour for students aboard the Club launch, two of St Augustine’s senior classes returned this year, supported by their Special Needs Assistants, Caoimhe and Liz.

The Commodore and Vice Commodore were on hand to welcome the groups, while boatman Fintáin provided a fascinating tour of Dún Laoghaire Harbour in beautiful sunshine.
During the trip, the students enjoyed seeing the many boats in the harbour, marvelled at the lighthouses, were delighted to spot a seal near the Marine breakwater, and were fascinated by the new floating sauna nearing completion in Coal Harbour.

Back on shore, the group enjoyed refreshments at the Club before returning to school.
It was a wonderful occasion for everyone involved and one that highlighted the value of creating meaningful experiences and connections within our community.

We look forward to building on this partnership and making it an annual event for years to come.

ICC Theory Refresher Day

Course starts at 09:00 in the clubhouse — arrive by 08:30 to park, get settled, and enrol. Wrap-up is around 16:30.

This is a focused revision session designed for experienced sailors who want to brush up on key knowledge (Collision Regs, buoyage, etc.) ahead of the theory exam — all covered on the day.

⚠️ Not a beginner course: If you’re not already at Day Skipper level, consider a full course before attending.

📌 Note: This session covers the theory exam only. To obtain your ICC, you’ll also need to complete a practical assessment (approx. €100).
