Last week, we had the pleasure of attending the launch of the Sectoral Adaptation Plan for Built and Archaeological Heritage. This plan was led by our research team, with Dr. Cathy Daly guiding the review and consultation process to update the plan from the 2020 version.

Well done to all, we are very excited about the outcome of this plan, many key stakeholders came together to provide a concise and clear plan for the next 5 years.

After many years of work by our research team, led by Dr. Cathy Daly, the National Monuments Service and the Office of Public Works, the Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment Report for Sceilg Mhichíl has been published!

This work involved background research into the island, its tangible and its intangible values and the projected climate and associated hazards. Through community and technical expert workshops, the priority risks were identified for the island. This document showcases some key opportunities for adaptation to ensure that the island can continue to provide the values it has to the people locally and nationally.

Our SeaCCHange project is out and about, engaging with schools on their local heritage. Kilmore graveyard, near Ballyduff in Co. Kerry, also known as ‘Cillín’ is a site of many unmarked graves, facing the Atlantic Ocean. A beautifully tranquil site that is special to locals, it is at risk of damage from more increased storms.

Cathy Daly and Ruth Graterol, our researchers on SeaCCHange, spoke to some local schools about the site and the impacts of climate change, and took them out on site to look for any signs of impact.

At Carrig, we continuously work with climate change and cultural heritage - an important cross section that shows not only how cultural heritage is affected by climate change, but how our response to climate change can be affected by cultural heritage.

Last week, a colleague of ours Dr.Will Megarry led a one day workshop on Climate Literacy for Heritage Professionals. The climate literacy course was developed as part of the Preserving Legacies project with the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) Climate Action Working Group and the Climate Heritage Network. A key goal of this project is to address a critical and time-sensitive need to equip those in the heritage sector to meaningfully respond to the challenges posed by climate change.

Our Senior Researcher, Dr. Cathy Daly spoke about the impacts of climate on heritage, delivering a workshop on key terms in climate change risk assessment and what we have learned so far through our work on the climate risk assessment of cultural heritage sites.

We will be developing a webpage of our work on cultural heritage and climate soon, so stay tuned!

If you're interested in cultural heritage and coastal adaptation, then you should follow our current research, SeaCCHange. With the Irish case studies led by our senior researcher Cathy Daly, as part of a wider collaboration with Utrecht University and Newcastle University, this research is set to provide a great insight into community led coastal heritage adaptation.

Our research team headed out to Kerry for for a heritage hunt at Abbey Island Graveyard. It's a beautiful site, with wonderful views and historic graves. This hunt was organised to engage with the locals on the site, and determine what connections and stories they have with the site. This will be integral to developing an adaptation plan for this site.

Thank you to all who attended (both local and international visitors!), your stories were fascinating.

You can read more about this event, see more photos and find out more about the project overall at: https://www.carrig.ie/seacchange.html
