Swim Ireland are delighted to welcome the news today that Swimming Lessons across Ireland will be permitted to restart when swimming pools reopen on the 7th June.

After months of discussions, submissions and presenting scientific research alongside our partners Ireland Active, Swim Ireland are overjoyed. Understanding the importance and the urgency of this for the future viability and sustainability of the industry, the sport and the impact on young people across Ireland, the news couldn’t have come at a better time. Over 400 swimming pools, thousands of aquatic professionals and business owners across the country have patiently awaited this news for over a year will now have an opportunity to reopen their doors and generate much needed income to ensure that the facilities and businesses remain viable and sustainable in the coming months and years.

Swimming lessons will be the only exemption to the individual training rule, acknowledging not only the safe environment that swimming pools provide, but also the robust protocols and guidance provided by Swim Ireland to support the aquatic industry in its return.

CEO Swim Ireland, Sarah Keane; β€œSwimming is such an important life skill and we are all grateful and delighted to be able to get our 500,000 children all over the country back to swimming lessons. A massive thanks to the Ministers Martin and Chambers, and Department of Sport, Sport Ireland, our partners Ireland Active and we know the facility operators will have welcomed this announcement with open arms and will adhere to the strictest health and safety protocols."

Head of Swim Ireland Education, Joni Harding; β€œThis is the day we have been waiting for, for what feels like forever! We are delighted with the support and acknowledgment from Minister Chambers that swimming pools are safe and are so happy to be sharing this amazing news with all our swim schools, facilities and members this evening. We asked to and now – such great day for the half a million children in Ireland who have missed out on swimming lessons over the last 5 months.”

We would like to thank Taoiseach Micheal Martin, Ministers Martin & Chambers, Dept of Sport, Sport Ireland and the Sport Ireland Expert Group for their continued support.

WATER SAFETY

Warm weather increases drowning risks

Know How To Stay Safe πŸŠβ€β™‚οΈπŸŠβ€β™‚οΈ

As the risk of drowning increases around warm weather please adhere to the following guidance:

1. If you are visiting a beach, river or lake that are unfamiliar to you, encourage friends and family to stay away from edges.

2. If you plan on swimming and there is no lifeguarded ensure that it is a designated bathing area that is known locally to be traditionally safe and that it has ring buoys present.

3. If there is a Lifeguard on duty swim between the red and yellow flags so that you are within the lifeguard’s patrol zone. A red flag means that a lifeguard has decided that it is unsafe to swim. If there is no flag, it means that there is no lifeguard on duty.

4. Lifeguards are operating on weekends in June and fulltime in July and August.

5. Warm air temperature does not mean that the water is warm. It is still too cold for extended swims and doing so places you at risk of hypothermia. Wear a wetsuit.

6. Swim with a friend or with family, in case emergency services need to be called.

7. Do not be tempted to swim in areas that you cannot confirm to be safe. There may be dangerous currents and hidden depths that may take you out of your comfort zone.

8. Do not overestimate your ability or underestimate the risks - please swim within your depth and stay within your depth.

9. Supervise children closely.

10. Always wear a lifejacket when on or near water and when angling from shore. Ensure that it is properly maintained.

11. In an emergency call 112 and ask for the Coast Guard.

Keep safe πŸ˜€
