Long before there was any welfare state, the sick and the poor of Irish America were nursed and schooled by an army of Irish nuns in black habits.

The Sisters of Mercy, founded in Dublin by Catherine McAuley, reached America in 1843 when Frances Warde brought a small group to Pittsburgh. Within decades they had built hospitals, orphanages, and schools across the country, tending cholera victims and Civil War wounded alike. For countless immigrant families, a Mercy sister was the first teacher, the first nurse, and the first hand of help they ever met in the New World. πŸ™πŸ₯

Was there a religious order or a parish school that shaped your own family's early years in America?

β˜€οΈ HOT WEATHER WARNING – PLEASE LOOK OUT FOR OUR OLDER COMMUNITY β˜€οΈ

With a period of very hot weather and a Yellow Weather Warning for high temperatures in place, we are asking everyone to take extra care and check in on older relatives, friends, neighbours and those who may be vulnerable.
High temperatures can have a serious impact on older people and can quickly lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion and heatstroke.

πŸ’§ Encourage regular fluids – drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don't feel thirsty.

🌑️ Watch for signs of heat exhaustion:
β€’ Heavy sweating
β€’ Dizziness or light-headedness
β€’ Headache
β€’ Weakness or fatigue
β€’ Nausea or vomiting
β€’ Muscle cramps
β€’ Fast heartbeat
β€’ Cool, pale or clammy skin

🚨 Heatstroke is a medical emergency. Call 999 immediately if someone has:
β€’ A very high body temperature
β€’ Hot, red, dry skin or excessive sweating that suddenly stops
β€’ Confusion, agitation or unusual behaviour
β€’ Loss of consciousness or a seizure
β˜€οΈ Stay safe by:
β€’ Drinking plenty of fluids
β€’ Staying in cool, shaded areas
β€’ Wearing light, loose-fitting clothing
β€’ Avoiding strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day (11am–4pm)
β€’ Keeping curtains closed and using fans where possible
🀝 A quick phone call, message or visit could make all the difference. Together, let's help keep our community safe during this hot spell.

Safeguarding Our Vulnerable Community

We were delighted to welcome two amazing Social Workers from the HSE Safeguarding Team who dropped in today to chat with our ladies and gentlemen.

The information they shared was both informative and helpful, raising awareness about safeguarding and providing valuable guidance and support. Our members greatly appreciated the opportunity to learn more and ask questions in a friendly and welcoming environment.

A sincere thank you to the HSE Safeguarding Team for taking the time to visit us and for the important work you do in protecting and supporting vulnerable people in our community.
