National independent Republican Wolfe Tone commemoration on Sunday 7th June 2026.

This commemoration is organised by Independent Republicans from across Ireland.

Genuine Republicans on the Dublin Streets

It was fantastic to see hundreds of genuine Republicans from across Ireland march through Dublin to honour the 81 Hunger Strikers on the 45th anniversary of their brave struggle.

The presence of the Hurson and Gaughan family was very poignant and the large amount of former prisoners and combatants was a measure of the people who joined us on the day.

The main oration by Republican activist and former blanket man Eugene Byrne was immense. Recalling the bleak days and the prison struggles and the bravery of the hunger strikers, Gene, as a Socialist Republican also took time to offer solidarity to the Stardust families and the Palestinian people.
Two strong Republican women read the roll of honour and the Rhythm of Time respectively while Cathal sang a moving song dedicated to the Ten.

It was great to see so many young people present and a special thank you to the James Connolly band from Derry who along with the piper kept the large parade moving thru the City. Our gratitude to the excellent colour party and stewards. Very pleased to see so many wreaths laid. Thanks to Starry Plough first aid and the black flag bearers.

The presence of banners from so many counties was an indication of how the Independent Republican movement is expanding. Our gratitude to those who travelled.

We continue to honour those volunteers who gave everything for the cause.
The cause of Irish Freedom and Sovereignty.
The cause of British withdrawal.
The cause of a Workers Republic.

The Independent National Hunger Strike commemoration on Sunday August 30th was a well attended and inspiring event. Well done to all involved in organising and those committed republicans who travelled to remember our fallen heroes.

On Sunday next, the 30th August, hundreds of genuine and honest Republicans will parade through Dublin to commemorate the Irish Hunger Strikers who gave their lives for British withdrawal and Irish Freedom.

The main speaker will be Eugene ‘ Gene’ Byrne, a highly respected Republican who brought the fight to the British.

Following his arrest by the British army after an operation in Armagh, Eugene was imprisoned in the H-Blocks and immediately went on the blanket with his comrades. Following his release Eugene resumed his Republican activities and has remained committed to this day to the ideals of Tone, Connolly and Pearse. As a genuine Republican Eugene has always been on the side of the oppressed, be that in Ireland or worldwide.
Eugene is an active GAA man and we are honoured to have someone of his calibre as our main speaker

Life long Dublin Republican Patrick Burke will chair Sundays commemoration. From his youthful days in Na Fianna Eireann to his current role as one of the national organisers for Independent Republicans, Patrick has always been involved in Republican activism. Hailing from a renowned Republican family who have been involved in every aspect of the struggle, we are again honoured to have Patrick chair the events.

The sacrifice of the Hungers Strikers must always be remembered. Please share this post and encourage your family and friends to attend.

A Republican soldier who lead from the front who never took the thirty pieces of the queens silver. They still fear his name. His ideals. His politics. His unwillingness to bow to Thatcher and those who followed her.

Black paint won’t cover up Sinn Féin’s betrayal of the people of West Belfast. The most deprived community in Ireland despite the Shinners pocketing millions. Betrayed the movement- betrayed the people. Quislings.

We send solidarity to the Hughes family and fully agree that Brendan’s legacy will outlive those who defended Scapp.

The Blanket Protest - the fight within the prisons.

In September 1976, IRA political prisoner Kieran Nugent refused to wear a convicts uniform following his loss of political status. Kieran made his opinion clearly known when he stated

“ if they want me to wear a uniform they’ll have to nail it to my back “.

Several hundred Republicans political prisoners then undertook a series of protests including the blanket and no wash protests where they endured endless violence and abuse from the screws culminating in the hunger strikes.

Earlier Republican prisoners had also undertaken blanket protests. In 1917, Padraic Fleming went on a blanket protest and even a hunger strike for political recognition. He continued protesting until his escape in 1919.

In mid 1943 , 22 republican prisoners held a blanket protest in Crumlin Road Gaol.

In May 1946, Sean McCaughy died on hunger strike while also on a blanket protest.

22 republicans died on hunger strike . On SUNDAY 30th August we will commemorate them all at our Independent National Commemoration in Dublin. Please join us in remembering our heroic volunteers.

Fasting for Justice

The ancient Gaels had a law which allowed for fasting upon another to obtain justice. The
tradition was used again by the womens suffragette movement which then inspired Irish
Republicans to use fasting as a tactic.
Between 1913 and 1922 there was approximately 1,000
hunger strikes by republicans. Several of these resulted in deaths and health complications.
Irish political prisoners in Frongoch after the Rising took part in several successful hunger
strikes.

On another occasion, Forty prisoners in Mountjoy jail were forcibly fed resulting in the death of Thomas Ashe. Furthermore on the 11 th August 1920 a mass hunger strike took place
following the withdrawal of political status by the British.

Republican women also used the tactic against the counter revolutionary free state when in one
instance over 96 women went on strike in Kilmainham jail during 1923 to ensure their right to
political status.

The Hunger Strike has played an important role in the Irish Republican struggle.

On Sunday 30th August we ask all genuine and uncompromised Republicans to gather at the
Garden of Remembrance in Dublin to commemorate all the hunger strikers and on this the 45th anniversary of the 1981 hunger strike we especially remember the Ten volunteers that sacrificed their lives for political status having been imprisoned for their armed resistance to the ongoing British occupation. They died for Freedom not Stormont.
