The college held its fifth Climate and Biodiversity Action Week last week, where we saw hundreds of students and colleagues take part. We aimed to raise awareness, encourage action and have some fun while learning about sustainability issues impacting us all. Over 100 students turned up to a biodiversity tour of the campus, and 200+ took part in the always-popular clothes swap. We had a packed house at the Biodiversity Leadership training and once again the Cycle Clinic booked out, with 30 bikes repaired for free. The careers panel sponsored by Arup and the film screening of Forever is Now were also highlights of the week, giving students great opportunities to learn and engage. Everyone on the Trinity Sustainability team got involved in the events, as did student societies, AIB Trinity Climate Hub, Estates and Facilities and the Green Campus Committee.

Thank you to who runs the national Climate Action Week and to everyone who took part. Every small action matters and has a big impact!

We are at the start of , the global biodiversity conference taking place this week in Yerevan, Armenia.

Trinity VP of Biodiversity and Climate Action Jane Stout is attending as a leader in biodiversity, as an academic and as the co-founder of the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan. She will speak on a panel discussing the impacts of invasive species on pollinators.

20% of Ireland’s native species are at risk of extinction, which is higher than the global average. Ireland plays an important role at this conference due to the current EU Presidency and we do have a good track record for nature diplomacy, getting the Nature Restoration Law passed at EU level as one example.

Even though there is more engagement around biodiversity, we don’t have action that is ambitious enough at the scale and urgency needed.

We have had a lot of fun participating in Insect Week this year! From welcoming St Laurence O’Toole’s third class to campus to explore insects, to enjoying the art of Ruth Power depicting butterflies from vintage cigarette cards, to hunting for bugs with our colleagues and learning more about insect research on campus.

As VP for Biodiversity and Climate Action Jane Stout says “Insects are the most diverse and underrated group of animals on earth - they have been around since before dinosaurs, inhabit virtually every corner of Earth and have an incredible variety of body forms and ways of living. They pollinate our crops, recycle our waste and keep our soils healthy. They are worth millions to our economies, and failure to manage them presents huge economic and health risks. We hope you join us in learning a bit about these fascinating creatures and take a peek into their worlds and why they are so important to ours”
